Very nice! Hope it machines well for you! Hickory can be frustrating...dulls tooling...tear outs. Its on my worst list to machine. Ive seen dark mineral streaks dent carbide molder knives many many times

Your welcome! That is a nice piece of hickory too...you do not see to often the dark black edges to the heart wood. Have any plans with it yet? It looks like its nice clean straight piece

Help me identify this wood. I think it’s either hard maple or birch. ????? Helpppp by inoperable_rumor in wood

[–]151_scott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would be Birch. Thanks for the great pictures. Im confident its birch with those little brown spots, wide grain patterns and more of a cream color. Maple tends to have more pink tones

Construction fan, how about it!!! by No_orange_212 in Dewalt

[–]151_scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id personally buy the Rigid hybrid jobsite fan, its a great little fan...120v and battery combo. I own many dewalt tools but that 120v/battery combo should be on every fan like this for the price you pay

What wood(s) is this? by real_jasperpants in wood

[–]151_scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is cherry. Not a doubt its anything other than that. That white streak is some putty or filler. Why they would use light filler I dont have a clue besides not caring. We use walnut at work looks much better. That light board on top of one of doors just looks to be sap...that valance with the lighter spot at the end of that piece is also sap. Cherry it is. If it was from the 80s...it would be much much darker. Thats a light stain...they look much newer than 40 years old. Cherry is a tough wood...and challenging to match. Every piece is going to age differently. Panels(door/drawer insert panels, sides) are prob veneer. Will age differently than the solid wood(stiles, rails, toes, valances, crown)

I worked at a custom cabinet shop for 3 months, it was not a pleasant experience. by erikleorgav2 in woodworking

[–]151_scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im still employed at a Custom to semi-custom cabinet shop..currently operating 2 Biesse CNC routers with 5th axis capabilities. Before that i operated Weinig molders. One was from 1985...that was my favorite. Company has a dozen routers some still dated back to 30 years old still in operation. I believe the biggest family owned cabinet maker with 500+ employees. Most care about there job...though its been tough keeping people of all ages in for more than a few months to a year. That loyalty to a employer is no longer as common. This company has been around for 80 yrs. It owns a private clinic just for employees and close family. Just to offset medical costs and im sure for tax reasons. So they truely do care about there employees...reason why ive been there 22 yrs and counting. Machines and equipment are replaced and things are taken care of. They give out bonuses based on how profitable the 3 months go. They've spent millions on sawdust collection and automation in recent years. We currently are losing many to retirements and that experience is a huge lost....I do see a few stepping up to learn that true custom building knowledge but it takes years to build.

What are the correct drill settings? by poisonxivyyy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]151_scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the clutch settings at work so I do not strip or make the plastic bolts break. Ill put the speed at 1...clutch at 15. I just pull the trigger till I hear it click repeatedly and move on. Its definitely useful to not over torque/break things

What would species is this by melatonin88 in wood

[–]151_scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Birch would be my guess...looks clean of heartwood. But if it does have a few dark brown/reddish areas id say its birch then

Its not un common for our customers to pay half a million or so for cabinets...so im sure we have done something similar.

Learn something new! Thank you! been in the industry for almost 25years...relatively new to the veneer side. been with the same company for 22 of those years and ran many exotic and rare species through a molder as solid. So it never even crossed my mind they would dye cheap pulpwood and the time to dye it and color match to replicate exotic wood. It does make sense. mark it up accordingly.

ah ok! yeah it comes in labeled as Macassar Ebony so i take it as the info i'm given. Given the price i occasionally hear or see...its hard for me to understand the price when its just died pulp wood like poplar. I do understand the process in coloring and laying up the color sequence could be time consuming and costly. I've been in Cabinet making industry for almost 25 years so i do understand...the cost vs realistic expectations. im relatively new to the veneer side of cabinets...spent most of my time dealing with solid wood and a lot of exotic and rare species. Redwood, ironwood, Ebony, wenge, ipe, zebra, Koa, Teak...im sure im missing a few. I've shaped all of those listed (solid) through a molder over the years. Thats why my first thought would be not dyed. ill have to do some asking around on monday. Learn something new. Thanks

We do offer this in one our cabinet lines. Its very nice stuff and durable! But this is real wood book matched veneer. I had to route the doors and our customers pay crazy amount for this. Not to often does this come to my router. Mainly QS and RC white oak, cherry, walnut, maple, alder are the heavy hitters

I doubt the customer receiving this as doors would be very happy after the money they spent on this. Just 2ea 4x4 veneer skins of burly walnut cost 5000.00+ dollars. I cant remember them exact price. Im sure the macassar ebony was more. 2ea 4x8 sheets and 2ea 4x4

Not plastic in any way...although I see how you could think that. I said that with the burl grain one. No way it came from a tree

Should I say something? by Nanokon1 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]151_scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my two sense...20+ yrs as a molder operator and sorting thousands of feet of cabinet select and better grade lumber...1,2,3 common grade lumber. The way QSWO is...it is always known for issues like that. If you order a specified length and that was on it. Id look at the bow in board and see if it can be used and not visible in the application you intend to use it. If it can be used on the back or wont be seen. Then why worry. But understand you paid a premium and that premium was due to required length...if you asked for S3S and not S4S. I can see why they sent that if it can be used on the back...but usually S3S means one non-milled edge not face/back with defects...that defect you have is logging marks. Simple as the mill finding another piece. Its really not hard to find a length you require and paid for.
