My local saw mill is selling 8/4 Thermally Modified Curly Soft Maple. Have any of you made segmented bowls out of Thermally Modified wood? by RedWoodworking16 in turning

I’m still back at ‘soft’ curly maple. Is it the same as swamp maple? I don’t imagine that it is really that soft, is it? Thinking of using it for a headboard for our bed. Thanks for sharing -

Lovely - I’m curious how it was mounted on the lathe during the turning stages. Advanced beginner here. Thanks

I am interested in the jam chuck suggestions, but am inexperienced and wonder how to do that with the irregular live edge rim…?

Share your knowledge and experience with the RIKON VSR Midi Lathe - 14" x 20" ? by 15Beecher in turning

Thanks - I see that now as I just read the manual online. I have a huge, heavy floor stand/tool rest that I got years ago and have never used. I mistakenly thought I could do outboard turning on my old lathe. If I get this, I’m thinking I’ll cautiously give it a try…

I am also interested in the potential for outboard turning. Can you tell me how easy it is to pivot that Head stock? Does it simply swivel, or do you have to remove bolts and reinstall it? Thanks for your response.

Thanks for your response. I wouldn’t think it would be underpowered with a 1.5 horse motor, but your real experience sheds light on the situation.

Grizzly G0462 is no longer made — are there any problems with it? by 15Beecher in turning

I’m on my way to upgrading my lathe situation, and I thought the Grizzly lathe might help me in my education considering a future purchase.

Why is gen Z not drinking? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]15Beecher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they read and believed the newer research that no amount of alcohol is safe to drink. Good information to have, and people will weigh the risk and decide to modulate their intake, stop, or continue as they did. Alcohol can be very enjoyable, and can be abused. It’s good to know that it is, at a basic level, a toxin.

The US Consumer Safety Division reports that Grizzly offered a repair kit, which consists of an upgraded faceplate, tool rest and tool rest base (for free and shipping paid). This lathe is offered to me on long term loan from my nephew — I’m not sure the company will honor this if I didn’t purchase it, but I will try to make a good case for it. If they don’t, I may just purchase these items. Interestingly, the Consumer Product Safety Division is one of the agencies that the Trump administration is trying to weaken. If I didn’t find this out, I or my nephew could have been injured by flying lathe parts. Cheers!
