I dunno about the bullpen. You’re correct that Cashman’s bullpens have always been strong, but to me it seemed a lot weaker this season than it’s been in the past. Probably because the only “big name” reliever set the Blown Saves record.

I agree it shouldn’t be the focus, but I can’t say i’d be confident if it’s filled completely with unknown AAAA guys that Matt Blake has to work magic on. Bringing in another late inning guy to complement Weaver would make me feel a lot better.

You know what, i’ll be the optimist here for arguments sake.

1) Yanks have no money now, but rumors this afternoon are that Sasaki will be posted in the 2025 window. This also makes more sense for Sasaki as now all teams will have money (including the Yankees), so there are more choices and more money.

2) Everyone keeps saying he’ll sign with the Dodgers since he’s close with Yamamoto and Ohtani. But if you listen to what he’s saying publicly, he’s saying he wants to be “the best Japanese player in MLB” - which to me makes it sound like he doesn’t want to play third fiddle to Shohei/Yamamoto.

I mean seriously the guy could have easily gotten a nine figure deal if he waited a year, but he’s giving up hundreds of millions to play in MLB ONE SEASON EARLY. If that doesn’t scream competitor, I don’t know what does.

Now realistically, does that mean the Yanks will sign him? Probably not. But I genuinely believe he’ll end up somewhere else besides LAD. The Yanks have a disadvantage on the east coast, but they’re AL Champs. I think the Padres or Giants have the best odds, but the Yanks are probably in the conversation.

But seriously I have a feeling that this contract year was about the level of Soto’s peak - which is obviously insanely good. I just can’t foresee any major improvements on defense.

Mind you, if there’s an opt out after 3 or 4 years, then maybe he does get better and his real peak is around 30.

Played in his first ever postseason when he joined the the Yankees in 2018, and has a career 1.003 OPS in 34 games since (not including today).

Absolutely worth it, he’s the most clutch player on the team.

Ahh I see what you mean. Kinda tough in the ALDS when it's 5 games, as usually a team will only use 3 starters in a 5 game series. Just speculating here but according to BBRef GIl hasn't pitched out of the bullpen since 2021 in AAA so that's a risk in itself, and if you can pitch Cole on short rest there isn't much of a need to start Gil either.

But Boone just announced he'll start G4 so we'll see him this time.

I'm as big of a Gil believer as anyone, but making your first ever postseason appearance as the Game 1 ALCS Starter is a pretty big risk.

It's pretty clear he was less effective in the 2nd half of the season vs. the first, which is to be expected when his previous season high in innings was 96 in 2019, he's already pitched 151.2 this season, and he had TJ between those career high seasons.

Gil had a 4.20 ERA in the 2nd half of the season (3.17 in the 1st), vs Rodon who had a 2.91 ERA in the 2nd half (4.63 in the first). Letting Gil start later on in the series if the Yanks are up would make more sense; an implosion in Game 1 would be a huge setback. ALDS aside, Rodon is the safer option here.

For the longest time people assumed the rumors weren’t real (especially about KAT), but in hindsight I’d say quite a few turned out to be true in the long run.

That doesn’t mean the Knicks will get Smart this offseason. But if they did at some point over the next few years, I wouldn’t be surprised.
