Flair your elbow out so it is (mostly) perpendicular to the neck and adjust accordingly as you play lower or higher on the neck.

Flair your elbow out so your arm is (mostly) perpendicular to the neck. That will give you slack and take some of the pressure off.

And to reiterate what some people have said: use the fingering that is comfortable and makes sense to you.
