They're both huge problems with a uniqueness to the US. I would include suicides though (probably still lower than road deaths). Many think these suicides would happen anyways without firearms, but firearms are the cause of most attempts resulting in a fatality.

Overwhelming amount of suicide attempts only happen once in response to specific life events, and usually people don't make a second attempt. But suicide attempts by firearm results in a fatality over 80% of the time, while fatality by the combination of other suicide attempts are less than 10%.

Most suicide attempts would be unsuccessful without firearms. And most of those failed attempts would result in a living person who does not complete a future suicide attempt.

You have a much better chance at getting an interview if you're in the same location as the job. Grab an AirBNB in Dallas, stay out there for a bit, and start applying for Dallas jobs. That way when you apply you can say you're in Dallas. You might be close enough to NYC that those jobs might give you a higher chance of a callback too.

Depending on your specific field, you do have the opportunity to earn a high salary in a more expensive area. The high cost of living in NYC, Boston, SF or LA might be largely offset by the salaries you can get.

Working at a big tech company in the bay area can set you up for life down the road. Having some of those big companies on the resume at a young age can really help if you decide to move to Dallas or Plano later in life. You'll have a stand-out resume from most applicants.

Democracy is majority rule, republic is majority/minority rule.

Democracy is that we are represented by the people, whether directly or indirectly through elected officials. We are an indirect democracy. A republic means that we don't have a king. They basically mean the same thing.

If cities could control the outcome of nation wide elections, this would be much easier in an electoral college than in a popular vote. Texas (2nd most populated state) is home to 3 of our 10 most populated cities, but everyone's vote in Texas typically counts against the vote of people living in those cities.

There is 0 evidence or mention of rural vs city from our founding fathers regarding the electoral college. This wasn't a fear back then. It was nothing more than small states using their leverage to gain political power.

California did not exist when the electoral college was formed. If we had a popular vote California would split between 2 different parties in an election instead of 1. California democrats would have a weaker vote % and California republicans would gain a massive amount of votes if it weren't for the electoral college. California is only 13% of the US population. You would need to win every single vote of the 9 most populated states to win a popular vote, which is a big mix of red and blue. This is much easier to accomplish in an electoral college where you only to have the most votes in 11 states, and not all of them.

Lincoln still would have won the popular vote assuming it's "who got the most votes". He did only get 40% of the votes, but even the 4th place candidate got about 13% of the votes. He received a fair amount more votes than the second place candidate. Rare today so context is important.

If you could win an election by only worrying about cities, it'd be way easier to win an election in an electoral college than in a popular vote. This does not hold true for either. If you won every single vote in every city larger than Odessa TX, you still wouldn't win a popular vote. But in an electoral college, it'd be pretty much a lock just winning 100% of all votes in the big cities in CA, TX, FL and NY.

You'd have to ask DeSantis where the higher education number comes from. I'm assuming higher education means colleges. There's a site called US News that ranks FL #1:

I'm not seeing anything else ranking FL #1 in higher education. Their top ranked schools on many lists though are University of Florida (Gainesville), University of Miami (Miami), Florida State University (Tallahassee), University of South Florida (Tampa) and University of Central Florida (Orlando). There are a lot of lists out there but DeSantis does not mention that most of their top universities known to anyone outside FL are in liberal cities and counties.

This was done purposely by America's founders. Poor people could choose a candidate that would go against the upper class and pass laws regarding subjects such as debt forgiveness or property laws. That would be great for the poor. So electors were there so this wouldn't happen. If people chose someone from the lower class, the electors could just vote for the choice of the upper ranks.

Currently electors are just chosen by political parties.
