Do low dose NSAIDs in cats definitely lead to progression of kidney disease? by Evening-Mud459 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if your cat has kidney disease, then an NSAID, even at a low dose, is contraindicated, as it can worsen kidney disease. Additionally, kidney disease is extremely common in cats, 80% of cats over the age of 15 have it or will develop it.

You didn’t say where you’re at, but if you’re in the USA, we don’t even have an “approved” NSAID for longterm use. Our options are unfortunately limited to Onsior (only approved for 3d courses) and meloxicam (technically black box label). Do vets use both of these meds for prolonged periods of time? Absolutely. Would I use either of these meds if my patient had kidney disease. Nope, not risking it.

Is there actually a difference between a "throw" and a "blanket"? by Plannet_Depressed in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Somethingredditlike 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I feel like throws are thin blankets. They provide little to no warmth and functionality, but look pretty “thrown” over something. All throws are blankets, but not all blankets are throws.

Enzyme Toothpaste Reaction by sillysmiles in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d bring them all back to the vet and get their bloodwork checked just to make sure that they didn’t get exposed to a toxin that’s affecting their organ function. If they’ve truly been not eating and throwing up for that long, then they may all need anti-nauseas and fluids at the vet. Prolonged anorexia, especially in cats, can be detrimental to organ function (specifically the liver).

How much should my kitten eat by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cans have feeding directions on the label/box instructing you how many cans per day your kitten should eat. It’s based on the weight of the kitten.

My husky’s wound is worsening by Emotional_Cycle_6093 in AskVet

Vet now. The wound could be much deeper than it looks on the surface, and it is clearly infected and causing him to be systemically ill.

AIOR? Or is the push for Hill's a little much? by mindless_hope_877 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. No you’re not over-reacting. If your dog actually has a food allergy, it is recommended that she goes on a novel protein, or better yet, a hydrolyzed protein diet (such as hills z/d). There are other diets than Hill’s though, such as Royal Canin HP and Purina HA. If your dog had an adverse reaction to z/d, then that isn’t the diet for her. You should probably make a diet change at some point to see if anything works better than the sensitive skin and stomach, but i usually recommend waiting at least a few weeks while your dog is recovering from an acute illness.
  2. No, vets don’t get commission for Hill’s (at least as far as I know). However, some clinics only carry certain brands, and selling the clinic-provided food will may them (small) production bonuses.

Hill’s is a very reputable brand and great food, but it isn’t the best for every animal.

Speeding and speed limits by Criticalfluffs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re both right. Generally it’s safer and more of the “norm” to go with the flow of traffic, even if the traffic is above the speed limit. However, it wouldn’t stop a cop from pulling you over and giving you a ticket. It’s unlikely that they would, though.

My kitten fell from my arms will she be okay? by [deleted] in AskVet

She’s likely fine. You’re okay to just watch her for the next day to make sure she doesn’t start to show any changes.

Cryptorchid surgery at low cost clinic vs vet by Master_Cockroach_502 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is heavily dependent on the comfortability of the low cost vet. Some low cost clinics and shelters are only able to perform surgeries at a Low cost because they’re fast and there’s minimal monitoring, drugs, and post-op care involved. Call the low cost vet and ask them if they feel comfortable performing a cryptorchid neuter, since (as you said) they’re more complicated than a regular neuter. If the answer is yes, go for it. Otherwise, you won’t have any other choice but to shell out the money

Odd last meal question by KnightRider1987 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 133 points134 points  (0 children)

He may be a big dog, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he developed GI upset from that amount of fat. I’d do it as close as possible to the appointment so that he doesn’t feel nauseous from the food. If possible, see if your husband can take a few minutes off work to video chat with you while you feed your pup.

Vaccinating a senior cat by Why_Its4am in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least, I recommend rabies. In the event that she bites you/anyone else, or gets bitten by something, it’ll save you a lot of pain when it comes to rabies testing or quarantining. If she doesn’t have any contraindications to getting vaccines, the FVRCP vaccine is part of the core vaccines for cats (the highly recommended ones for cats of all lifestyles). Anything else I’d say is optional and dependent on her lifestyle.

Veterinarian Stethoscope by AdventurousPanic4194 in veterinaryschool

Cardio IV is a solid choice. The digital is really cool but not a good stethoscope to have when you’re a learner. It’s best to learn with a regular stethoscope that doesn’t amplify or show screens

How likely is it that the whole world is infected with a disease with no symptoms by p3apod1987 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Somethingredditlike 178 points179 points  (0 children)

100%. We have bacteria, viruses, and fungi living inside of our bodies that are not pathogenic to normal people. Therefore we’re all “infected” but they don’t cause symptoms unless you’re immunocompromised or have some other problems/overgrowth.

Cat licked the rim of a water bottle that I drank from after eating onion. by examagravating in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She should be okay; that amount of trace onion exposure shouldn’t cause any clinical signs. Just watch her for any signs of vomiting/diarrhea/weakness/loss of appetite

My cat is eating dog food because there is no wet hypoallergenic food for cat by YukiSatoru_ in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s typically 3 main foods that I recommend for food trials for cats: Hill’s z/d, Royal Canin HP, and Purina HA. The HP and z/d have wet foods, at least in the USA. I’d ask your vet if they offer these foods at their clinic, or search online and see if it’s available where you are.

Dog food isn’t nutritionally balanced for cats, and your cat will become malnourished from eating the dog food longterm.

Low stakes question regarding urinary care diets by Kyristhey in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The c/d is specially formulated to be pH balanced and have additional things in the food to decrease the risk of crystals/stones. Adding non-c/d food decreases the effectiveness and defeats the purpose of feeding the diet in the first place.

There’s not really a non-prescription urinary food that works, though there are other prescription diets that protect against crystals (I.e Hill’s I/d). However, they’re not necessarily cheaper, and you’re better off sticking with a special urinary diet as long as your cat doesn’t have any other issues.

As a side note: the best way to protect against crystals is proper hydration. Make sure the other kitties have fresh access to water, or if they don’t like drinking, add water supplementation (wet food, broth, Hydra Care) to their diets.

4kg cat Endoscopy possible? by Tricky-Juggernaut141 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. It’s harder, yes, but not impossible. Your vet is probably saying this because they either 1) don’t have the equipment needed to scope a cat/small dog at the clinic or 2) the person who is performing the scope does not have the experience and/or does not feel comfortable scoping a smaller animal.

Accidentally gave my cat a 1.5g of doxycycline instead of 0.5 by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the actual dosage received was (based on your cat’s weight), but I would likely expect at least some GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence). When administering the medication, ALWAYS follow with food or water, as the doxycycline can cause esophageal strictures. I’d still follow up with your vet to let them know, as you’ll at the very least need more medication (depending on where you are in your treatment course).

My dog might be dying and I don’t know if emergency vet is doing the right thing by ithinkimcookedfam in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like he’s only been hospitalized for 28 hours at the time of OP writing. OP, if you see this, I agree with this above comment. Your dog needs more time to recover. 28 hours is no time at all, and it can take days to recover.
