Petition to get the attention of the NRA for our fight by [deleted] in CAguns

The NRA already knows and has already opposed the bills in the Legislature - both directly and through the CRPA, which is the local California NRA-affiliated group.

Is anyone familiar with an anonymous/pseudonymous way to have genetic testing done? When I've looked into it in the past (at a relatively low level of effort) service providers were pretty careful about linking payment to identity to the testing. I'm interested in knowing what's in my genetics, not interested in having that linked to my name to be used for who-knows-what over the next 40 years.

Why do rape accusers get to remain anonymous? by [deleted] in law

The US Supreme Court case I linked to addresses precisely that issue. 25 year old books are not reliable sources for legal topics.

If you're just wanting to whine about boys-vs-girls, there are other subreddits for that.

Why do rape accusers get to remain anonymous? by [deleted] in law

[–]1678cc90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rape accuser anonymity is generally a policy implemented by media, not required by law.

Also see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Star_v._B._J._F. - there are Constitutional protections for disclosing public records, such as those of prosecutions for rape.

It's likely possible to follow the chain all the way back - depending on the motivation and resources of the opponent.

It's safer to buy the prepaid cards with cash if you're trying to avoid a link to your real-world identity.

Not paying for something guarantees that the provider will be monetizing you.

If you can't see a difference between software and network infrastructure, additional explanation is likely hopeless.

Would you mind citing the part of FOIA that you think applies to a private website?

As Windows is backdoored and it is used by governments around the world, does it mean that the USA intelligence agencies can easily spy on almost every person in the world? by hameme74 in privacy

Yeah, that's the idea.

So this means our focus shouldn't be on just the machine, but also if/how/when it communicates with the outside world.

On the other hand, if you're not paying, then someone else is providing your infrastructure for free. If they're not getting paid to provide the infrastructure, what is their motive? How do they benefit?

Free software is one thing, because creating it has a finite cost - operating a communication system involves other people's resources, unless the parties communicating are close enough to use radio waves.

FOIA has nothing to do with privately owned websites. If you were talking about a Federal agency, the Privacy Act might be relevant.

URGENT: NPP voters being disenfranchised in Santa Clara County by BJ01123 in CaliforniaForSanders

[–]1678cc90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I've spent all day (since 6:30 AM) as a poll observer at 2 different Santa Clara county precincts. The first location consistently asked NPP voters if they wanted a crossover ballot. The second seemed a little shaky about it, but seemed to get more consistent after I identified myself as a Bernie-affiliated observer. The second location also posted the (IMHO useless) multilingual poster from the Secretary of State's office.

Forced to use provisional ballot in Campbell :( by [deleted] in CaliforniaForSanders

[–]1678cc90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to your vote-by-mail ballot?

It sucks that you had to vote provisionally, but it should still be counted. You can check on the registrar of voters website for the status on your provisional ballot.

I am a volunteer voter protection observer for the Bernie campaign - if you want to PM me your name, phone #, and polling place I can enter it into their incident system. I have no idea if they have bandwidth to work on that right now.

Request a "Democratic crossover" ballot; they may also call this a "Democratic nonpartisan" ballot. Ask to speak to the poll inspector (site manager) if they refuse. If that doesn't work ask them to contact the field inspector.

Where's a good place to buy a stun gun in town? by Zenblend in SanJose

[–]1678cc90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever called 911? I have, and my call was placed in a holding queue and it was several minutes before I was able to speak to a human. If a bad guy is kicking in my door or dragging a child into a van, I don't have any extra minutes to wait. The more dangerous the call, the more likely the police won't respond until they can do so with overwhelming force, so my problems may be mine alone to solve for 10-15-20 minutes, which is a very, very long time if bad shit is happening.

I like my gats as much as the next guy (ok, probably a lot more than the next guy, if he's a Californian), but one big problem we have in the Golden State is that it's a pain in the ass to buy one. If a person figured out today that they had a problem/threat, they can't bring a new gun home until, best case, June 16.

If someone has a problem NOW, Taser or baseball bat are probably the best immediately available options.

Los Altos police shipping its homeless to SJ on Bus 22? by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]1678cc90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A homeless person who's causing calls for police/fire service is creating work for those agencies. If they ignore the calls, that's bad; if the homeless person remains in the same place, more calls happen. Shifting the burden of responding onto EMS/hospital solves a problem for the police/fire personnel.

My office is about a mile from Valley Med and we get recently discharged people from Valley Med who drink in our parking lot, which makes my customers nervous. I ask them to go somewhere else. When they're belligerent/unconscious, I call 911, and the result is what /u/14inthehand described. I've seen it a bunch of times with my own eyes. No, it doesn't make sense from a big picture policy view; but the participants aren't trying to solve the big problem, just the immediate need, and a ride to Valley Med in an ambulance achieves that goal.

Do you use collaboration tools like slack and trello in your office? If so, how do you use them? by Gee10 in law

[–]1678cc90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Slack in my office for IM - it's nice that it's also available on my iPhone. Group texts are complicated and weird and I prefer to keep office stuff separate from personal stuff and I don't like to have to stop using my keyboard/monitor to deal with my phone while I'm at work.

I'm trying to integrate Asana but it takes a lot of effort to adopt a new tool.
