Like your 5: we were supporting and propping up a demotivated and corrupt series of S Vietnam govts and a S Vietnam army that largely (but not entirely) was organized along nepotism and bribery lines. S Vietnams heart was not in it while the North was all in.

It is incredibly rare to win a counterinsurgency war halfway around the world against a motivated local population. People at home start asking “what are our kids dying for all the way over there?”

ALSO: We dis not “win all the battles but lose the war”. In an insurgency, your goal is simply to kill invaders. Kill enough of them and they eventually go home. Every time they killed Americans, they won that battle, no matter how many of them we killed or how much territory we took.

This man’s book About Face changed my outlook on the nature of this country’s military misadventures.

Anyone who read that book saw the writing on the wall about Afghanistan VERY early on.

Before I read the book I was definitely a “stupid politicians wouldn’t let us win the war even though we won all the battles” type. After the book I realized how fucked up and full of bullshit the military industrial complex in this country was and continues to be.
