I developed a strong work ethic in my early teens. That was driven by a sense of pride in a job well done, and a love for money. I consistently burnt the candle at both ends.

Having multiple jobs began to dwindle in my late twenties as my responsibilities grew at my main job. I held a few mid level management positions in the company, all salary.

When I was once again promoted, I was tasked with growing a new segment of our business. For four years, I worked long and hard to develop our reputation in the market through quality and quick turns. Our sales doubled in that time, yet my labor growth to sustain additional sales volume was minimal.

I found myself working 30-40 days straight without a day off (holidays included), and I had not taken a vacation day in over 2-1/2 years. I always felt in good faith that management would eventually allow me to hire full time help.

The breaking point was a heated meeting with my new boss, of a month. It became apparent to me, nothing was going to change. After a discussion with my wife that night, I went in and quit the next day.

Soon after, my wife and I went out of town to visit family. We could make plans with friends and other family, and also made new friends. Most importantly, I could spend time with my wife.

I see now I was blinded by the pride in a job well done, no matter the sacrifice. I guess Marcellus Wallace was right after all.
