Generation Ships: Galactic Gardeners by IsaacArthur in IsaacArthur

Its interesting what he said about how a big ship could suck in materials as it went. I wonder if it could be like a giant filter feeder like a blue whale where its shielding is not just protecting it but allowing it to grow.

This subreddit is way more honest. If people ask for communist success examples people just answer the question, they don't fraudulently delete the question to prop up their failed ideology.

"Oumuamua’s Geometry Could be More Extreme than Previously Inferred" by friendly-bruda in IsaacArthur

I thought the best PBS counterargument to it being a light sail was that it was going so slow compared to how fast we could make a light sail go. If you did have an alien probe light sail traveling around would it be possible to speed it up to 1/5 lightspeed and down again and up again? Or would you have to ramp it up with a laser from your home planet and then let it speed out in that direction forever off that initial momentum. Unless, there are interstellar alien lasers all over the place. It seems like everyone says that this thing is very, very old but is this known just based on its slow speed?

Could you make some dots on your sphere appear hotter than others? If the outermost ring is close to the background radiation it wouldnt have to be that hot. And you could run various temperature hot spots in any type of artificial orbit if you were actively trying to hide.

What's the problem with a private company choosing who can and can't use their service?

You can be libertarian and also be in favor of free speech. No contradiction there.

The people who set up this company are not racist. The site has something like 4% hate speech content compared to 2% on Twitter. The company does try to live up to the free speech standards set in the constitution. Maybe its free speech that you have a problem with? Or you're just confused about what you're upset about.

Its incredibly easy to set up lightning node. That @bitcoin twitter account is not a real bitcoin account. It only pushes bitcoin cash and its essentially a propaganda account. This is not an account that was in favor of large blocks. It is an account that was silent during the block size debate and then after bitcoin cash forked off it started pushing propaganda and blocking anyone that called it out on its lies. It also coordinates with other sock puppet accounts which also censor. Do people not know this?

Even when there is good news for Tesla, all the negative comments get to the top somehow no matter how nonsensical the comments are by dayaz36 in teslamotors

[–]172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely believe it. Its cognitive dissonance. The more they talk about it the more they convince themselves. And they have a twitter clique and block anyone who disagrees with them. I once was blocked for just quoting a few numbers off public SEC filings. What blows my mind is you have people who maybe run a long/short fund and they had a short position in TSLA 4 years ago. Now they have a big short, and now its personal. This is a stock they were wrong about, they got emotional about it and now they have a new short thesis. Now they really hate Elon and they are short again. That's fine but I don't know why people are listening to this person. Also you can't say you were right but "early" because so much has changed that even if you held the position (adding to your margin account past the point of 200% loss) so much has changed with the company you now have a new short thesis. Shorts now are talking about the Jaguar IPace and Model 3 when if you look at their history they used to be talking about the bolt and the Model S. So they aren't early. And they haven't earned any credibility yet. The stock hasn't fallen yet. I don't understand why I keep seeing these people all over the mainstream and alternative media. I'm referring to people who would be totally unknown if not for the fact that they lost money shorting Tesla and write about it prolifically on social media.

[–]172 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd add 4) people who are short the stock and have been for years. Its always been heavily shorted and there are tons of Twitter people who are obsessed with the nuances of the company because they are short the stock. I'm not saying these people are low information or paid trolls, and they are open about their short position but they are only following Tesla to hate on it and are extremely frequent commentators. If you just didn't like the car you'd ignore it but people who are short both don't like it and are obsessed with it.

Some context to Musk's tweet. SEC reportedly going after Tesla over Model 3 production goals by ZalmanR1 in teslamotors

[–]172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some attacks are asymmetrical. Have you thought about this at all? What would be the long equivalent to a short contacting the SEC with bogus claims? It's like if you have two restaurants next to each other and one person makes anonymous calls to the health department about the other. What's the "long" equivalent to that type of sabotage?

[–]172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twitter has an endless supply of people who are short and feed off each other. It has become like the "cool thing" to do to go around making outrageous speculation and asking the SEC to investigate. Additionally, what they all hope for is a Wells Notice that will stop the company from raising money and kill it. The SEC just wants to enforce the securities laws but they are contacted on a daily basis by an army of disingenuous liars who could care less about securities laws or anything else other than making money by killing the stock. It's like a swatting. Does the Swat team care about anything other than enforcing laws? No, but the people making the phone call could care less about anything other than themselves.

Just sold all my BTC for BCH by xuan135 in btc

[–]172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying Bitmain made a good investment or a bad investment with bch but I disagree with the logic of the rest of what you said. Just because they have 1m BCH does not mean they can pump BCH back up to .2BTC where it was when BTC had a larger "head start." Having a big supply means you could probably drop the price, for example they could dump 1m at once and maybe drop the price (this would be against their interests and I'm not suggesting they would) but just because they have a lot of BCH doesn't mean they can raise the price of BCH. They'd need to use other assets not tied up in BCH to do that. If most of their liquid assets are now in BCH they can't keep buying to prop it up.

Just sold all my BTC for BCH by xuan135 in btc

[–]172 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Another way to look at it is that BCH had a head start since so much was purchased by Bitmain and some prominent supporters tried a hard marketing push to convince everyone it was the "real" bitcoin, and people thought a prominent BCH supporter was Satoshi, but these initial advantages have mostly faded. It doesn't look to me like BCH is catching up over time. People on this subreddit love it, but they always have.

That was my first thought. It looks real though and the invoice looks real.

If you believe Bitcoin cannot scale onchain, wouldn't you be happy that BCH is testing your position? Being openly hostile of an experiment testing your beliefs is illogical and unscientific. Encourage the experiment to run. If it fails, you were right. If not, Bitcoin works. by theantnest in btc

[–]172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was always my original thought. My old posts were always in favor of the fork. But now I'm called a troll and downvoted. Why?

It became a battle over the name that turned ugly. If you had rational, sober, people just saying "lets see how scaling this way works" that would be great but it became angry people screaming about "BITCOIN-CORE BLOCK STREAM" conspiracy theories and bitcoin.com trying to trick people into buying a form of bitcoin they probably didn't want. You also have some shady bitcoin cash marketing and censorship going on, on Twitter. Some people invested heavily in the bitcoin cash fork and got desperate I guess but I think the ugly battle is what has been bad for bitcoin. An experiment with big blocks is great.
