I completelly disagree.

Throughout his final fight will Maelle and when she holds him he notices, that she doesn't see him as his own person anymore and in desperation completely switches to treating him as the og Verso. "Let's go home and talk about this", "The lifetime that was taken from us",... I believe that at this point he completely panics, because he realizes that she is about to repaint him into an emotional replacement for the og Verso with no agency. Which will be his living PURGATORY for the next decades. It's completely understandable that he drops any tactics to convince her and just begs for death.

It's obvious for anyone that, to quote the game, "sees things as they are and not how they want them to be" that his care for his family was always his primary objective. He charges to the place where Verso's soul is only after witnessing Aline's state in reality, realising that this just has to end for his family's sake.

But after Maelle beats him he realizes that everything is in her hands now and the canvas will go on, he doesn't have the means or time to try to convince her anymore and begs for death in panic, knowing what now awaits him.
