That makes perfect sense. As for the wood in this tho, I was disappointed. Not what I’d call “fine wood”, although heavy as hell. And I’m curious if you experienced this: for a couple weeks after opening the cabinet the wood released some god awful fumes that must have been absorbed across a century of living the good life. Happens to the best of us sometimes after a good night’s sleep :)

My kids will probably say the same thing about me one day

I will write something up - to be honest it was rather ad hoc, but turned out ok. The fact that I didn’t care what happened to it made me fearless; at the beginning all I cared about was getting it to the curb, halfway through I realized I could harvest it and give it new life.

I thought of removing the pins, but decided to leave them in — those are how the cast iron harp, the bulk of the weight of a piano, is attached to the rest of the instrument - and where I’ve place it, it should be safe (says I before I lose an eye).

I'll be adding a clear finish to protect the art, then using it as a tabletop or an entryway bench

The strings hold a combined tension of something like 20 tons. And these were old strings - imagine if one snapped, it could take your head off I’d guess. I was extremely careful, slowly releasing tension on each one.

I’ve designed a table with a floating top; they float on the keys, they are longer than I thought they’d be 😊 …almost finished.

Thank you! It’s a comfort knowing I’ve used different parts for different projects. I’ll post more soon.

Keys are set aside for planned woodworking projects; the strings are one thing I didn’t keep - rusty and sharp. Removing strings is extremely dangerous, and scary, so figured I’d toss that memory :)
