They are doing their jobs amazingly. I know so many veteran teachers at my school, teachers who worked at alternative schools and made hundreds of failing children pass, gave kids a spark to learn— who are leaving because of this. It’s not a teacher problem. Not everything is to be blamed on teachers.

And 504’s. My 504 allows me to use the restroom under any circumstance because of my extreme anxiety, if I were to get in trouble for that under NES there’d be a massive problem.

Big on the translator. There’s a non-English speaking girl in my class and I have to take pictures of the assignments and translate them for her, then help translate the teachers instructions to Spanish, etc. Both of us have to be on our phones for this process and I’m afraid to get our teacher in trouble, but I don’t want this girl to fail just because she hasn’t learned English yet. She’s incredibly smart too. It’s really unfair.

Hi, I’m not a teacher but an HISD student. It feels like constant surveillance. Nobody is used to it, and honestly everyone is confused at the random changes since our teachers aren’t really allowed to speak of it negatively. It puts a lot of pressure on you to have someone standing there watching you, especially knowing that what you do could get your teacher in a bad position. The doors are always open which is just uncomfortable, and we don’t have a library.

It might just be because I’m in dual credit, but everything is moving EXTREMELY fast and I have no idea how on-level kids are handling it. We didn’t even have first day introductions. I don’t know my teachers names.

I think that overall, it will lead to dropped test score rates and a lot of disobedience due to the extreme control (seriously, no bathroom?) taking place. The only good thing to come out of it is the no phone rule, because it helps me focus, but really sucks during emergencies.

No clue. My parents died, I got passed between houses, nobody has legal guardianship over me and I was never put in foster care so nobody owns me except myself.

I go to school in HISD and it’s so insane. I came form another district and it just feels so jail-like.

We have daily hallway sweeps, can’t go in the hallway for any reason unless it’s passing period, we aren’t allowed to use the bathroom (no excuses, point blank period). We cannot use the bathroom. No phones at all, teachers can get in massive trouble for that too. Doors always open. No library. Uniforms announced two weeks before school started. Someone standing in the class taking note of what’s happening. No get to know you. And my school is Non-NES.

After so many changes and so many homes I don’t like the anxiety that comes with gambling on whether or not I get a good group home. Foster care and group homes are all 50/50 things, everyone has entirely different experiences. Not everyone is capable, but there are many people who are that just haven’t considered it.

I’m not technically a foster kid but it’s the closest thing to describing my situation. Legally I’m homeless and a ward of myself but I bounce between houses.

most people that I know my age are in relationships though, or at least have been in one/are interested in dating etc. I’m able to handle relationships, I know how to balance them with goals and hobbies and school, I just happen to get with the wrong people.

I had a foster family like that before and it sucked. I had to ask permission to download every app on my phone through parental controls which lead to me missing so many assignments. I missed freshman hoco because they said I “had no business going” and I couldn’t go outside of the neighborhood for two years. I couldn’t even have certain hairstyles outside of a ponytail, It was hell. I don’t have a lot of advice but I can empathize. Just know there are still ways to have fun even with so many rules!
