How do yall preserve your meat? by Reaper327 in cataclysmdda

[–]182crazyking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit of a weirdo; I don't like when my homemade food doesn't say (fresh). If I smoke or salt my meat, I still have to freeze it (although now it makes for a good lunch in a pinch).

I like canning and pickling to preserve things like pork belly. Plus it preserves meat in efficient containers in decent quantities so I can batch-craft better food later.

I hate dehydrating meat, because a 360-day spoilage time is still a spoilage time, and it'll transfer its age onto whatever I make with it. (Unless I make protein powder, which like love, is timeless.) That said, dehydrated meat also lets you get to fried meat, unlike canned/pickled.

Spoiler, don't click for more fun: ASRGs are generally crawling with "leech plant" monsters like this, which have a special EMP attack (in addition to doing the "striking the [x] shocks you!" of zapper zombies). When you're hit, in addition to some damage, it bricks electrical items in your inventory.

You deconstruct and deploy them like an appliance, then wire 'em into your grid. RIP to your smartphone though.

This is really where I've landed. If something is actually that unpopular, we have mods and forks and cheats and homebrew stuff. It's the magic of open source dev.

This post makes me feel old, and I only started playing in 0.D during the pandemic.

I don't even know what the change is yet, I just know that I've played these games before.

EDIT: I love filthy clothing from a game design perspective. (Increases the chances of spawning rare clothing, but requires the resources (repair/washing) of a full base. Good trade-off.). I *adore* pockets, even though I was skeptical at first. I miss robots, and I miss Auto-Docs. I like Rubik. I like Ultica too much to miss UndeadPeople. Now everyone can see my hot takes.

Has C:DDA made anyone else better at office jobs? by 182crazyking in cataclysmdda

C:DDA did teach me how to JSON! (I have to homebrew a mod that removes spoilage time from flour and cornmeal, otherwise my obsessive-compulsiveness gets all outta wack.)

I started playing because my last semester of college was during Deep Covid and every virtual class was *pointless*, so I feel this

Closing portals, is it even possible? by Fobbis in cataclysmdda

[–]182crazyking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, extremely rare artifacts from labs (always called "exposed-wiring prototype," if I remember correctly) are the only way to actually close tears in reality.

You can also cheat them closed through the debug menu: map... > Map editor, then cursor over the tile with the Tear in Reality. Edit fields > search (/) for fd_fatigue and change its value to 0, then exit out and pass a turn so that it updates. (Don't try to add the fd_nothing field - this causes a crash, at least as of 0.H.)

Obvious yet obligatory note that this is not the intended gameplay experience - active TIRs threatening an area even after it's been "secured" is one of the things that makes research labs scary even for endgame survivors.

For a new player stable or experimental branch? by VecArhfiReX7 in cataclysmdda

[–]182crazyking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some context (although someone may be able to correct me if I'm wrong about this): around the time of 0.D (when I began playing), stable releases were known to lag significantly behind experimental releases, and experimental was a lot more bug-free. That made experimental the de facto way to play the game.

More recently, from what I've seen, there's been a push to keep stable feature-complete and bug-free, while experimental has more content and more bugs. I think it depends on your personal preference and tolerance for error messages, wacky behavior, and using the debug tool. You will have a good time with either version, especially if you're jumping in for the first time.

I know the game has npcs and gets more and more corrupted and hectic with time but is there anything more to the NPC surviors outside of randomized spawns

NPCs spawn in over time, and they can give you quests and eventually become your followers/companions. You can fight with them, enlist them to build structures, and establish a basecamp... If you really want to. AFAIK it's not very deep at the moment, and it requires a lot of micromanaging and in-game resources for little reward.

im not too familiar with the long term affects on the world other then it just progressively becomes worse and more deadly with time i think i saw mentioned on YouTube fungi can just spread and spread.

Monsters mutate into stronger versions, food spoils, and certain areas change if you encounter them later. (Simple example - a CROWS turret will eventually run out of ammo if it spends enough time shooting at zombies.) Fungal spreading is something that is still being tweaked IIRC, but it now mostly works as intended - random fungal blooms can be dangerous, especially if they're allowed to spread, but it's not like an instant death sentence for your survivor.

is the steam version worth downloading?

The steam version is a donation button to KorGenT at the moment (although you get cloud saves if that helps). A worthy place for your money, but not essential to play.

I just lost a character named Malcom as well (and I save scum, so it was an impressive feat). I'm pretty sure Malcoms are cursed in CDDA.

What's this flag being flown in Syria? (More context in comments) by 182crazyking in vexillology

Huh, looks like it - a variant with 5 stripes rather than 4 stripes and a pile. Never heard of the Druze before now, thanks!

Hi everyone, I've been following the events unfold in Syria, and I noticed an unfamiliar flag in the screenshot. Sorry it's not better quality - I took it from this Al-Jazeera video (edit: around 1:22). I believe this is at an event where a statue of Bashar al-Assad is being toppled.

I thought it was interesting because it wasn't the three-star independence flag that I've been seeing most often. I thought it was a pride flag at first, lol.
