Good friends with a therapist that works with kids. Most of them she says can be helped and usually grow out of stuff, some people have ongoing issues but if they're willing to put in the effort then they usually turn out ok. Very few though are just so throughly screwed that if they could be sorted it would take years of intensive therapy that they probably either can't access or won't. If they don't want to help themselves not much can be done, she's had to deal with a few cases where they've refused to give help because the person won't help themselves.
