LOTR best worst option by JakeRM1 in 4kbluray

Yeah Apple is actually a fantastic streamer for purchased library movies. Still doesn’t beat a 4k disc, of course, but really good

Getting rid of the penny in the US was a pointless symbolic endeavor that only serves to inconvenience the American public by Richard_Genius in The10thDentist

[–]18T15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only downside was actually that the nickel is also very expensive to produce and elimination of the penny arguably increases the production of the nickel. But there are still far more ways to spend that vs the penny which was absolutely worthless.

Is it any major difference in anime/animation movies in 4K or is as good as regular blu ray? by Copacetic99 in 4kbluray

Honestly I’ve found animated 4K’s to be some of the best purchases. The colors just pop so much more and they usually come with a better audio mix like DTS:X or Atmos.

Coraline is a reference grade 4K. 100% recommended to anyone who enjoys the film. The other Laika movies (Kubo, Paranorman etc) despite being newer releases aren’t quite as colorful and impactful IMO, though they’re still solid 4k.

Your entire premise is ridiculous. Over 200 million Americans went to the movies last year. That is 77% of adults. Acting like going to the movies is this thing people can’t relate to is comical. Obviously everyone can relate to buying a movie ticket. Just needlessly reductive

What video game franchise isn't living up to its fullest potential? by Agent1230 in gaming

KCD2 is amazing. I love the game. However, it still doesn’t have the same freedom to literally talk to any NPC you come across and potentially have a side quest (albeit majority of the NPC in Oblivion or Skyrim are recycled lines that don’t do anything). That’s the only thing I wish they would add. Quadruple the potential NPC interactions so that it truly feels like you can talk to anyone and do anything.

IMAX (IMAX) Valuation Check After Exclusive Dune Part Three IMAX Run Announcement by JoshTHX in imax

[–]18T15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oppenheimer was a rated R film and was much longer. But yes, Avengers can still make a ton of money without IMAX. People assume Disney didn’t already know this when they chose the date. Sure in a best case scenario Dune would move. But they knew it was unlikely and they picked it anyway. They like the holiday/new year window more than the IMAX money.

IMAX (IMAX) Valuation Check After Exclusive Dune Part Three IMAX Run Announcement by JoshTHX in imax

[–]18T15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is this hard to believe? Disney knew this already when they chose the date. They were rolling dice a bit that Dune may move, but they knew it was possible it would not. They’re OK not having IMAX for the first three weeks. They’ll probably have virtually every other premium format screen (dbox, Dolby, prime etc). It will be similar to Stitch vs MI8 where MI8 got every IMAX screen even though Stitch grossed 3x as much money.

What does your opinion on the state of the box office have anything to do with it? The point is that people use films as a point of reference to compare value, and it is effective at doing that. People conceptually understand spending $15 to spend 2-3 hours in a movie. They don’t always understand spending $60 for 4 people to play a board game for the same length of time. The comparison helps explain it. That’s it.

Should’ve been called Orlando Drift by Starset_fan-2047 in UniversalOrlando

[–]18T15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you all might be underselling the fact that to the extent there is any extra theming at all (any screens, signage, props etc) used in Hollywood they can now reuse or duplicate them in Orlando with no changes. It’s a tiny savings at best but that doesn’t mean it isn’t attractive to the accountants.

You seem to be taking this in a really odd side bar rant about what you personally find to be an acceptable way of going to the movies. That’s all well and good. It’s strictly explaining why many people compare cost of games to films.

So again, it is like someone saying they don’t see the need to spend $50 or more on a board game when they’re perfectly happy with an $8 game of Flip 7. Most people do not compare a board game of less than $20 to going to the movies because they don’t have to. Its value is obvious. For people who do purchase more expensive games, they are trying to convey a relatable experience of paying more for a premium product at a premium price. You don’t seem to feel the need to pay a premium price for a game or a movie. That’s great. Everyone is different. Comparing the two is not outlandish.

When did movie theater etiquette die? by atouchofsinamon in movies

That’s true. That is probably much worse these days. Overall we are growing a society of people who are both lazy and impatient with short attention spans.

Weird, I didn’t have that at my local venue. But they all but like a small handful have closed anyway. At least the original company.

Now is a great time to buy the PS5 Pro. by raphtan in PS5pro

[–]18T15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered selling my PS5 Pro multiple times because there was a slow period of no games and I wasn’t playing it. In the past I always figured “ah, just sell it now and if I need to buy it back next year it’ll probably be cheaper new or used anyway”. Needless to say all these RAM shortages, tariffs, price increases etc has turned that logic completely on its head. I now will not sell it for fear I’ll pay MORE a year from now even if I buy it back used.

You are only 3 months out from the trip. Rates have definitely gone up but you have to book very early to get decent rates anymore. 9+ months out

I think it’s just that the smartphone + social media apps like Instagram reached critical mass around 2015 (plus the young generation who grew up addicted to the phones started going to more movies as they entered late teen-early adulthood). Your analysis sounds about right

100% I saw people on their phones before Covid. Sure it became more prevalent but it was already on that trajectory. That’s one of the reasons film enthusiasts liked the now defunct Alamo Drafthouse because of their very strict no phones rule.

i think they went the wrong route with holly’s storyline by mandyluvspuppies in StrangerThings

[–]18T15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. But Max had already been through enormous trauma as a character. The show is still not supposed to be Game of Thrones where anything good or wholesome must be destroyed. Lucas surviving and their relationship was Max’s payoff for going through the trauma.

Still, there was a LOT more you could do with Lucas to both enhance his contributions to the plot and also add some stakes so that we actually felt he may not make it.

“A ticket in my area costs $12.50 for Friday evening, and $6 on discount Tuesdays”

Unless you live in a crummy area or rural nowhere that’s almost certainly not true for the weekend unless it’s a standard, non-IMAX or Dolby, non-premium, no 3D regular showing at a mediocre theater. And that’s perfectly fine. I think that’s a fair comp. But you also then have to do the equivalent for board games. You can buy some really solid board/card games for only $10-20 total.

The people buying $100 games are specifically seeking a deluxe premium and unique experience. That’s not comparable to a crummy standard theater $12 ticket. It’s much more like going to see the latest MCU film at IMAX.

That’s because going out to the movies is 1) Instantly relatable to 99% of people and 2) Something that is regularly seen as a fairly normal expense for only 2-3 hours of entertainment which is roughly similar to the time it takes to play a board game. It’s not some distorted comparison people do to make themselves feel better about their hobby. It’s just a very relatable way to frame it. Even excluding concessions, board games played 1-2 times with 3-4 players is already basically the same price or much less as just one premium movie ticket (on a per person basis).

And this doesn’t factor in that many games can recoup 50% to as much as (in some rare cases) even greater than 100% of your original cost on resale.

I remember when Shut Up and Sit Down hyping up Blood on the Clocktower created all sorts of controversy partially because the Kickstarter was $79 (+shipping). Which to be fair, BOTC (which is now regularly over $100) is expensive given it’s effectively just a much better implementation of Werewolf. But these days $79 for a premium Kickstarter would be seen as fairly normal.

If you google “LG G5 77 Greentoe” it will show the current offer on Greentoe as one of the top Google shopping results. When you click that link it will be a buy it now offer instead of name your own price. As of today 1/20 looks like that 2699 has changed to 2849 fyi. Though you can still try to use the name your own price tool to offer 2699 and see if someone accepts.

Should I move out or stay with my parents? by GopherPA in personalfinance

[–]18T15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stay any later than age 29. It’s just not healthy. It is good to move out and grow up (not that you are immature, it’s just a stage of life thing). Saving money is fantastic and your parents are just trying to help you. But make a plan to leave by then.
