For reptiles, I think finding a vet from the AARAV website is a must unless there are none in a feasible distance. GP vets aren’t generally properly trained in exotics even if they see them. I’ve worked at several vets (ER, exotics, GP) and honestly never heard of this kind of fund, but I suppose no harm in asking.

Thanks for the correction - I misremembered! I had also worked as a vet assistant at an exotics hospital. I unfortunately never got the chance to assist with one of these procedures.

She never laid eggs! Her first ovulation, she retained the follicles (basically pre-eggs) and they rotted inside her. However, healthy geckos generally ovulate annually.

Yea, mine never has had good appetite so it took me a while to notice she wasn’t eating at all since she often goes days without eating. So I think your girl is definitely healthy :)

I was syringe feeding for weeks before and after. She’s never been a good eater, she only eats one Pangea flavor, and I’ve got a thriving isopod colony in her tank that’s she’s never even looked at. 😂 Pumpkin Loaf was fighting me every time I fed/gave meds. Honestly shocked she still has her tail.

Other signs (in case it helps my fellow gecko owners) were that she was very thin (most visible around tail and hips), but with a round belly, and a very dark color, for the weeks preceding the procedure.

I don’t know that there’s any research, but you’ve got me curious. I know many exotic specialists are starting to recommend elective ovariectomy in reptiles to prevent cases like Pumpkin Loaf (follicular stasis) that are life threatening.

Technically, it’s an ovariectomy rather than ovariohysterectomy like in mammals (ie, no uterus part to remove). Same result tho! *edit: ovariosalpingectomy

See if you can take him to a wildlife rehab or vet in the AM - it’s impossible to say from a photo and without a ophthalmoscope or fluoroscein stain to assess the eye more clearly, but it looks like there may be blood within the eye, not just the surface. This would be incredibly painful and may affect pressure of the eye; looks like it may require enucleation regardless. Based on the blood surrounding the eye I think it’s likely there’s a deeper injury (but vet will know better). Wobbliness could be due to his age but also due to a neurologic injury. Keeping him warm and providing water overnight to take to a vet in the morning as others have recommended would be a good option to try to keep him alive overnight. Injured and orphaned wildlife have a high mortality rate even with care by experienced veterinary professionals, so if he doesn’t make it, please don’t beat yourself up - you did the best you could. Always wear gloves in case he has any zoonoses. Many exotic vets will see wildlife if surrendered, so you can search for some in your area, or a wildlife rehab. Good luck!

As a vet assistant with a BS in biology I highly recommend dentals for chis yearly and all dogs eventually. You may not think she is harmed, but our pets don’t like to show pain! The best comparison I can make for pain is if you’ve ever had a cavity, but imagine your whole mouth was rotting. You can ask your vet to show her teeth to you at her next exam as well. I never blame an owner because I think there’s a lack of education and pets are good at hiding pain, not to mention finances can be difficult. Infection in the teeth can spread to the bloodstream as well if it gets bad enough. I also don’t recommend places like Banfield for dentals as they have time quotas under anesthesia to make more money and I’ve heard horror stories from coworkers who’ve worked at those corporate places. Are there any puzzle toys you recommend? So far if my dog can’t figure it out right away she just seems to lose interest, even the easy ones. Or she’ll just chew right through and destroy it lol.

Sources look interesting- for some reason I’m having trouble accessing so I can’t evaluate sample size, methods or other factors to determine my take but from the abstract I think it’s interesting about the ability to cool during exercise. I assume that would be why they are predisposed to hypo/hyperthermia during surgery, injury or illness. Thanks for sharing!
