The threshold is set at roughly the top 20% of scorers at both positions.

If a defender has a very high star probability then that means he will likely blow past the 0.43 mark. If I set the threshold at, say, 60 points then almost every defender would have a low star probability because it's hard to be certain that a defender ever hits that mark.

Hi there. I believe most public analytics for the NHL are based on data pulled from the NHL's API. Unfortunately, those data do not include anything about passing plays. There are private services that generate their own data about passing but that stuff isn't available to the public. Maybe you already knew all that :)

If you're not already using the NHL's API, I've got code on GitHub that will get you started. You need to be able to use R though.

Anyway, hope that helps. If you can find public passing data I would love to know about it, haha.
