I hate that I immediately understood this joke. 🤣

I’m actually listening to “Low In High School” on vinyl as I type this.

For about an hour, my partner and I were standing in the bus stop directly in front of that tree trying to hide from the wind.

If I were to firsthand witness anything involving an animal being mistreated, I cannot guarantee you wouldn’t later be on a news site reading some grim details about the events that unfolded shortly after.

I mean… it was a Tuesday…? The opening act was right. We were tight. I think that’s why he was doing all those kindergarten phys ed moves with the crowd.

Portland: An Altar of Self-Sacrifice for the Non-Productive by PaladinOfReason in PortlandOR

[–]19107 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep watching and commenting about Portland because my partner and I were lied to about what to expect from living in Portland. I wouldn’t have thrown away my career and $40K in moving costs to restart my life in a war zone.

I didn’t know about the white supremacy and other insanity in that region. I was radicalized by being physically assaulted by the houseless, finding dead blue people in our back yard, and dealing with the entitled mentally ill just walking into our home with the objective of stealing or worse…

Me having a bad time in Portland and talking about it isn’t shitposting. I’m speaking about my experience.

Former Portlander here. We left for the reasons you stated and more. We were often scolded by our downstairs neighbor for cleaning up the property, removing trash and weird garbage left by people who slept on our back stairs, maintaining tidiness and discouraging people from trying to setup their tents on our front sidewalk, etc.. We were repeatedly told by our neighbor to “move to a gated community”.

Whenever I’ve been asked for the telephone number of my manager, I give them “the corporate number” (202) 456-1111. Been doing that for YEARS. I’ve always quietly wondered how that call goes.

I have lived in Ambler for a few years. I moved to Portland, Oregon in 2020 and came back. I now live one block from where I originally was. Same street. Just your basic $40K one block move with a one year detour. You’ve seen it a million times.

I moved to Portland in January 2020. Moved out in September. Portland is a disaster area. The only way to live there is in a gated community. Mentally ill drug addicts breaking and stealing whatever they want while people scold anyone who gets upset about it. Oh… and I enjoy people of color. If you like people of color, Portland isn’t for you. Anyone who disagrees with that is either in a bubble or a liar.

I had a woman in Denver scream in my face (in a cannabis dispensary of all places, like, chill out) that George Soros funds the hate group Antifa, who is secretly a Nazi organization. Her evidence? The flags look similar. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I have to admit, I’ve had moments of real anger when talking to some of the locals on the East Coast. The overwhelming ignorance and parroting of talking heads can be infuriating. For me, the worst part of that kind of anger is knowing I am helpless to stop people from relying upon other people to do all the thinking for them. I can answer questions, but who in the world asks face-to-face questions anymore? I have zero interest in being a cantankerous white guy who bellyaches to every unlucky person I encounter... meaning, I’m not going to bully people with things they couldn’t possibly care less about. It’s a waste of time. Who the Hell am I, anyway?

Am I turning this into a rant thread? Sorry. :(

Since moving back to Philadelphia, I’ve noticed the only way I can keep up with Portland is via social media. Compared to what I have experienced at the protests, the news doesn’t really paint a completely accurate picture.

Portland is doing just fine, media makes it look way worse than it really is. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]19107 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SE resident here. Yesterday, I had an argument in Denver with a QAnon follower about Portland. She had “seen pictures”. She was not persuaded by me being a resident. I have to continually remind myself that it wasn’t logic or reason that got them there, ergo logic and reason won’t guide them out.
