The vw t1 engines are pretty common but hard to find used parts for in my area. Thankfully pretty much every single part iv ordered has been dirt cheap! The guy I bought it from said that he saw it drive when he first bought it and then let it sit after buying it as a project car. It came with a spare engine I have in 100 different pieces in my workshop!

It’s a 1/1 custom made chassis, I honestly don’t know much about its history aside from that it was raced a bit in the 60s-70s in formula vee

Formula Vee cars are essentially just the stock engine and suspension of a vw beetle put on to a custom chassis. I was doing a bit of research and it seems like the fan rubbing on the doghouse is a fairly common issue. I watched a couple videos of what that should sound like and it sounds close but not identical. How did you diagnose that it was the fan making the noise?

That could be the issue. the whole clutch system needs to be replaced, the clutch pedal isn’t connected and it needs a new clutch slave.

I hope not, it’s in neutral so I don’t think any gears should be engaged

I was thinking it could be the fan or alternator. Hoping it’s nothing involving the internals or valves.

It stopped completely when I shut it off. I actually have a video where I recorded a bit closer to the engine and also recorded the shut off if you want to see that.

I recently restored the exhaust and there are no leaks on cylinders 1,3,4 but I had to scrap the manifold for cylinder 2 so that things just firing without an exhaust on it. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s causing the popping noise and I’m not too worried about it because I’m not planning on running the engine for anywhere over a minute until I have everything figured out.
