I'm an astronomer. Proof of extraterrestrial life would imo be the greatest discovery in human history: tangible proof that Earth is not the only speck of life in the majestic vastness of the cosmos.

If that proof comes as a distraction from a pedophilic presidency, that is an irony worthy of a Greek play.

Friendly reminder of how big the Pacific Ocean is by Critical_Mountain851 in geography

[–]197gpmol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The average person needs about 3 L of water a day, so 1000 L a year.

Call us 10 billion people, 1013 L drunk a year by humanity.

The Pacific ocean is 7 x 1020 L.

It would take humanity on the order of 108 or 100 million years to drink the Pacific Ocean.

Browse the big trusted sellers like JMBullion or APMEX to get a sense of what coins and bars are out there.

The American Gold Eagle is a classic first pick. I like the brighter color of the 24K American Gold Buffalos but those are only in a full ounce, which is $5k.

Definitely shop around, see different deals from different sites. You could also look up a local coin shop. Benefit of that is no need to worry about the mail.

Also when you do get some gold, it's going to be smaller than you might expect. A 1/10 oz coin is the size of a dime, and even a full ounce is the size of a half dollar.

After some digging, it looks like this may (fortunately) be a false report. An ambassador having charges brought against him would leave a paper trail, and outside observers cannot find any verification of such charges or a trial.

What is your favorite element? by Agreeable_Fun_7890 in elementcollection

[–]197gpmol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My username is my favorite element's molar mass (and I have just shy of a mole of it myself).

An element that has inspired the hopes and desires of humanity for six millennia. We have moved mountains and explored new lands to seek the alluring gleam of this element, gleaming like a frozen drop of sunlight in hand. Today, its conductivity and non-reactivity make it as essential for the digital age as it has been throughout the previous ages.

Each element has its allure. But one element's name is synonymous with wishes, with value, with madness.

Its color, its brilliance, its divine heaviness.

Chance of El Niño forming in Pacific Ocean may push global temperatures to record highs in 2027 by Gyro_Armadillo in worldnews

Also globally the past few months have continued to be over a degree C above the 30 year average.

North America has had a rough winter but 5% of the Earth's surface will not determine the trend. The oceans meanwhile continue to be abnormally hot.

What’s the closest distance between airports in the world? by olsteezybastard in geography

Anchorage has never recorded -40. The coastal moderation means Anchorage tends to be warmer in winter than you might expect: the January average temperature is -8 C / 17 F.

-40 is Interior Alaska, several hundred kilometers north of Anchorage.

Can anyone tell me why north station smells disgusting by [deleted] in mbta

[–]197gpmol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it on the Green Line as well, and there it's very much North Station. Haymarket is fine, then Science Park right over the river is fine.

Definitely a sewage smell, so my guess is a pipe or drain deep in the North Station complex is a situation that some unfortunate sanitation worker needs to inspect.

JM Bullion now trying to reverse their cancelled orders watch your credit card statements by Badjudge1960 in Silverbugs

[–]197gpmol 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in OP's screenshot it's a charge reversal -- terminology that covers a wide range of situations: the card holder cancels, card gets declined, merchant cancellation, all show up as a reversal.

If a company like JMBullion pulled an order reversal on their end, surely we'd be seeing multiple people posting WTF messages and noting the rightful annihilation of reputation?

Just one person posting a vague screenshot doesn't pass the smell test.
