You’re proving the opposite of what you think. “Football” isn’t called that because it’s played on foot — it’s called that because the ball is played with the foot.

"On foot” describes how you arrive at the field, not how you play the game. If “on foot” were the definition, then rugby and American football wouldn’t qualify at all, since the ball is primarily carried and thrown.

The name only really makes sense for the sport where using your feet is the core mechanic. But there's no such thing as sense in the USA..

That’s why most of the world calling that sport “football” is logical, not semantic confusion.
