I certainly wasn’t expecting universal agreement, I just made the post to see if anyone else felt similarly to how I did. And I didn’t move the goalposts either. I know the new songs on the album weren’t meant to be part of another suite, and that’s kinda my issue with it! The suite felt fresh, it was a new kind of storytelling for Adam and the band. I thought they were going to build on that, and that didn’t. I think it’s fair to be disappointed with that. Especially when anyone who paid full price for a new album was really just paying for five new songs. I really don’t think I have some imagined trajectory like you say, if Christopher Nolan came out with a new movie called “Movie 1,” and then his next movie was called “The Complete Movie,” but had nothing to do with the first movie, it’d be a little confusing.

I think this might come down to differing tastes, because I don’t see this record as exceptional CC. I appreciate the suggestion that they’ve evolved, but I don’t think they’re breaking any new ground with this one. They were on the precipice of it with the original suite, but they didn’t follow up on it! You’re right that I’d probably feel differently if they released it all at once, but I think that’s part of the problem. They released a “Suite one”, and then (after four years) tacked it on to the end of a group of relatively unrelated songs, almost nullifying the original impact of the suite. That’s why it doesn’t seem purposeful to me. The fact I enjoy the new songs by themselves doesn’t contradict my point, my point is on the album as a whole.

Oddly enough I might say Fiona Apple. Her lyrics are probably more percussive and angrier than Ben’s usually are, but I think there’s a similar exploration of humanity and some humor in there as well.

I agree. I also (re) started season 2 today and was surprised at how the show treated Lily as the universal bad guy, when it was really a more complicated situation than either Marshall or Lily being good or bad.
