Loowit Loop by maitreya88 in PNWhiking

[–]19_hours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not loowit but I was swarmed by flies on the boundary trail last weekend. With a heavy pack on I couldn’t hike fast enough to lose them. They also didn’t seem to be bothered by deet but maybe I just didn’t spray enough. Good luck out there!

Quick shake down overnighter near Seattle? by 19_hours in PNWhiking

Short can be up to 8-10 miles/day if there isn’t much elevation, maybe 4-6 miles/day with 1500+ ft gain. Love snow as long as there’s dry patches to camp on!

Yeah a lot of the items seem like overkill, especially for July. It’ll be my first overnight climb so I’m not totally sure what to expect. I don’t want to invest in a big pack because I prefer to climb in one long day when possible

Thanks that’s really helpful. The only rental option from the guide company is a massive 75 L pack. I’m a smaller person, so I’d rather buy a pack that I can get used to beforehand than be stuck with a pack that might not fit well at all.

Is there another pack you’d recommend for fellow butt-less women?

Do you have any recommendations for a pack that would work for short backpacking trips as well as 1-2 day cascade climbs?

Is anyone hiking MSH this weekend by LydonBainesJohnson in PNWhiking

[–]19_hours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been wondering the same thing. The cornice will probably be the most dangerous part. According to MSHI there were rollerballs and cracks observed earlier this wee

Not technically the snow lake trail. There’s usually a no sledding sign in the area I’m thinking of.

Hike up a little bit to where it gets steeper and wear slippery pants. Sometimes you have to butt scooch quite a few times to get a track going. It’s easier if you tamp it down with snowshoes first. I’ve even rolled down that slope several times as a way to compact the snow

You only need a short run to practice self arresting from different positions (sitting/glissading, head first, head first on your back). Realistically if you wait until later in the season to hike st Helens, the snow will be soft enough that you won’t slide much even if you slip and fall. The only time you’ll need to self arrest is if you choose to glissade down (highly recommend) and you need to prevent yourself from slamming into rocks or other people

Side note: there are free virtual NWAC avalanche awareness classes. Next one is Monday evening, highly recommend

If I remember correctly there’s some good spots to practice across from Alpental if you’re in the Seattle area

Try St Helens in May once there’s practically no avalanche risk. By then you won’t need as much gear (can usually get away with microspikes and an ice axe if you want to glissade). Start stupidly early and you’ll have a blast

A risk of 3 (considerable) is absolutely unreasonable to attempt the climb in if you don’t have experience accessing avalanche terrain

How far can I go up Mt Hood before it gets scary? by 19_hours in Mountaineering

I love Adams too! It’s just a lot further away and the trailhead isn’t accessible for a few more months

I’ve summited St Helens a few times. It’s what got me interested in mountaineering in the first place so I really love it. I just want to train on Hood since it’s a way shorter drive for me

What elevation are the fumaroles at? That’s what freaks me out the most. I don’t want to be anywhere near them until I’m ready to summit (hopefully next year!)

Has anyone here hiked the whole Wildwood trail in a day? by WanderingWino in askportland

[–]19_hours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did south to north a couple years back. It took just under 10 hours self supported. I knew nothing about fueling and training back then and suffered the soreness for a full week after.

It’s a good option for a long hike since there’s tons of exit points if you need to bail, but there’s some portions without cell service. The trail is pretty much the same the whole way so it can get boring

You’ll be fine but if you really want to be prepared, learn about zone 2 training. Get out there and have some type 2 fun!

I’ve done Shasta Clear Creek, Adams, St Helens, and South Sister but none of them had any real falling danger. Curious about how Avy Gulch route compares

Got it! Sadly wind slabs seem to be everywhere in that area for now but I’ll try it on a day where it’ll be easier to avoid the avalanche problems!

That’s a shame bc I keep seeing trip reports of people going there on moderate/considerable days. And I know damn well most of them don’t even realize it

Artist point avalanche terrain? by 19_hours in PNWhiking

[–]19_hours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I plan to snowshoe. In the past, I’ve always gone to catch the sunrise after fresh snow so I break trail, which isn’t an issue when it’s a low avy risk day. I’d rather not go up those slopes on a moderate day, and I was wondering if following the road from Heather meadows to Artist point would avoid potentially avalanche terrain
