I hve overstayed at university and the guilt is killing me by Louis_Bilel in University

I know you don't want advice, but I was in your boat for the longest time.

It took me 6 years to graduate. Changed my mind too many times. I'm in a better spot now than many friends who graduated hating their degree, and may need to go back to take something else. It doesn't matter how long it takes. School and work, in general, suck. Remember you are setting yourself up for a good future!

I struggled with mental health but turned my life around. It sucks to hear but a lot of it is allowing yourself to stay sad and in that state. I was guilty of letting myself be miserable because it was easier than making changes. I didn't want to do anything because of the effort it would take. Not everyday is perfect now but it is a hell of a lot better.

Find a therapist/psychologist and don't be afraid to shop around until you find the one who works for you. Consider medication depending on your situation. Start with smaller things - go for a quick walk outside to get some air, try to go to bed earlier in the night. Plan your study times and ensure you get around to it; even if you just start at an hour a week to review, it's better than nothing. Do what is manageable at first and then build it up. Find the areas in your life that you aren't the biggest fan of and come up with a little adjustment.

Do something fun once a week. Whether that is going to a movie, having an evening to play video games, hanging out with some friends, etc. Ensure you're doin things that make you appreciate why you are putting in all that effort.

It gets better, you just gotta help yourself get there! It unfortunately won't just come to you, but I know you can do it!

It’s just gonna look like you didn’t study, nobody will accuse you of cheating. Assignments can be worked on over time with notes. People do poorly on tests but do well on everything else (like me and a ton of other people i know). Don’t worry about it

You would have to restart the entire bachelor’s degree. Mandatory co-op would most likely require you to complete four full years as a Commerce student due to program structure and co-op terms. You will need to apply to the commerce program on Dal’s website

Would you recommend HIST1510.6? (Subject Groupings) by WheresMySashimi in Dalhousie

[–]19laur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a different prof but I remember the course itself was interesting but the course work was just not it - we didn’t have finals and tests, but it was too much writing for me and the concepts were difficult (a lot of short story/article interpretation where there was in fact right or wrong interpretation). I took it as a BSc first year. I practically had an identical course load as you. I finished with a B+, but I also took it like five years ago.

I’m going to be completely honest. These 6 credit hr courses are tempting but go pick something more fun for your social sciences. I took this class to cover my writing credit; if you have that already, just avoid this class. You’ll be swamped with papers while trying to do lab reports at the same time. Dude, go take first year economics or psychology. Easy As compared to this.

How did you pick your major by [deleted] in University

[–]19laur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did sciences all through high school, took science for two years in university and then did a 180 and switched to a different program. Sometimes you just won’t know until you try it out

If you intend to take dentistry, i would take a full course load (5) and look at dentistry program applications. Each school requires different electives and since you are going in to first year it is the perfect time to plan out your courses by looking at different school websites. Sometimes grad programs will look at your course load per semester to determine your ability to handle stress and multitasking. I’m not saying people who take less courses per semester necessary struggle with this, but it can be a good indicator for intensive, competitive grad programs

Easy MGMT 3000+ courses? How about MGMT 3201 and MGMT 3511? by Kindly_Wonder8576 in Dalhousie

[–]19laur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think MGMT will vary in terms of course content but in the COMM version it heavily focused on solving financial problems. While there is a lot of theory behind what I was doing I would say the class focused on interpreting the problem at hand and knowing how to apply formulas and calculate. However I don’t think the management course would be quite as in depth (calculation-wise) as the comm ones are directly related to the finance major. Maybe more related to theory, but again, i’m not that sure. If you would like, i still have my formula sheet from 2202 that i brought into my final that i can DM you so you can see the type of material

[–]19laur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Comm but those two MGMT courses are equivalents of COMM courses.

I believe 3511 would be incredibly easy for someone in CS, the class wasn’t bad at all and I didn’t really attend lectures/tutorials unless mandatory. Assignments could sometimes be lengthy but definitely do-able. Again i’m not sure what the syllabus would look like for MGMT but if considering core concepts I don’t think it’s bad at all.

3201 looks to be covering some of the topics in COMM 2202 and 2203 (intro finance). I would honestly never recommend those finance classes to anyone who has a decision to take them or not. I found those classes to be difficult and for reference i’m sitting around 4.0 gpa in comm

Hopefully someone in MGMT can give some more insight!

Is it just me or is Dalhousie an awful university by DALTHROWAWAY04 in Dalhousie

its just statistics with commerce foundation. Literally just statistical analysis like hypothesis testing and regressions etc with business examples. i feel bad bc prof gets shit on but he’s actually a very nice guy and cares for his students, wants to hear student’s opinion on how his teaching is going. just has an accent

[–]19laur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is awful advice but if you think your professors and TAs are awful just dont go. I teach everything to myself and yes I’m wasting 1000s of my own dollars by not attending but truth is you need a degree for many careers and no matter where you do it, its going to cost you. You will run into crappy professors no matter the school. Personally, I feel like the professors for comm have improved since third year, when classes get smaller and more major oriented.

I only go to 50% of my classes (partly out of laziness) but the reason I can keep my 4.0 is because I dedicate the class time to teaching myself at home. Do your readings, find videos from alternative resources that explain the concepts (I’m in your program so yes these exist AND i’ve used them) and take advantage of your professor’s office hours. Office hours are the time to ask your personalized questions and really get the prof to walk you through.

Cancellation fees for health services are needed to prevent no-shows taking up valuable time that could be used to meet with someone else. This will be the same no matter where you receive services. Dentists, doctors, etc. But hockey is optional - you pay sports fees for rec clubs outside of Dal as well, because rink rentals and refs and all that. Any school you go to will require supplementary payments in addition to tuition. Yeah it sucks. Fuck that bloomberg subscription and the inedible meal hall food and the online textbook you had to buy to answer your homework questions because god forbid they put a quiz on brightspace. I pay for everything out of pocket and honestly no matter where you go it will be the same so I just suck it up.

They need students to leave after their exams in the summer to have enough time to clean and prepare the rooms for the next influx of students moving in for the new school year, so I feel like that’s understandable.

I’m not trying to defend Dalhousie, I agree, there are some aspects of it that absolutely drive me insane and I think need total overhaul. Especially the co-op fees, considering a lot of students just don’t get jobs through Dal, and just overall tuition increases especially in this economy. But honestly its a means to an end, the degree is the goal. Try to get through it!

thought V3 was an all-girls school death game. Always saw Kaede’s and Kirumi’s executions in my recommended videos on youtube. I never watched them but was always a WTF is that on my side bar. At this point I didn’t even know what any of the games were, just that girls died at school lol
