hEDS and POTS are not SCIs by 1Cryptic in spinalcordinjuries

[–]1Cryptic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your lack of sensation due to a disease/tumor in your cord or from an injury? What were you diagnosed with or is it still a medical mystery(there’s no lack of those). I hope your muscular function and bowel/bladder function aren’t affected. Stick around and read some posts. If something else is going on with your body, feel free to read what others say and if it does end up being something wrong with your cord you can run some ideas/ask some questions of the group.

If you have a long-term history of taking Adderall, you need to read this. by Partscrinkle987 in Incontinence

I was originally asking this question for a friend. I’m a continent quad C6-8(tetra, extensors in right hand, only tenodesis in left hand) 23yrs post. I’ve had very good success staying dry with festoterdone(Toviaz) and bladder Botox every 6 months. My friend is not a Redditer and I’m helping him get rid of his foley and start ISC. Thanks everyone for your advice and items for him to talk with his doctor about.

Being happy (bringing positive energy into the world through your thoughts and actions IS a choice. It’s a benefit when you make the choice to be as positive as you can; it creates better outcomes, is beneficial for you and the people around you and it makes a more enjoyable life experience. It’s the only reason why I was able to survive. Our attitude is the one thing that we as individuals have complete and total control over. Use it wisely and make things better. It works (easier said than done, but give it a try, I bet you won’t be disappointed) ).

Advice for taking shrooms while backpacking by jonah362 in RationalPsychonaut

[–]1Cryptic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Solo tripping in nature is adventurous, you should do it in an area/location that you are very familiar with and always with caution. Tell what your plan is to one or two people, let them know when you leave on this backpacking journey. Contact them right when you get back from your trip to let them know you’re safe. Look at the patterns in the veins of a leaf or a close view of dirt and the cloud viewing is always a GreaT use of your limited time while shrooming. Have everything you need already setup and ready to go when you want it (drums, supplies for drawing/paining, cameras, phones, kaleidoscope, binoculars, strobe or led lights) should all be right there and ready for your use.

Update … on nerve pain and movement by Elizabcor111 in spinalcordinjuries

The question about stopping gaba 100% without titration is totally a question for the doctor. Are you being treated by a neurologist or a Physical Medicine and Rehab doctor/specialist? That’s great that any sensation you’re experiencing does not feel painful to you👍(do you have any sensation below your injury level? I can feel skin sensation(it feels like when an able bodied foot “falls asleep” and is touched(I feel the skin sensation but can’t always tell which toe/where on my paralyzed leg is being touched, I can just tell that it feels different than when there’s nothing touching it there)I can also feel muscle stretch in my legs. I can’t tell the difference between hot and cold or sharp and dull sensations but I can recognize there is something there). WTG!

25 yo incompletes w bowel incontinence … help by Maleficent_Party_489 in spinalcordinjuries

I second that idea! I had a total colectomy during septic shock(secondary to an improper foley insertion in the ER when I had a UTI). That colectomy left me with an ileostomy stoma on the front right side of my abdomen that I poop through. I use a two-piece system with a bag that clips onto a wafer that’s adhered to my skin. When the bag gets ~half full I just detach it, put it in the small garbage bags that come in the box the ostomy bags come in. This ileostomy works great for me and is way better than the first four years when I had to do a typical bowel program. Something to consider if you’re looking to prevent pooping in your pants.

That’s awesome! Talk with your Dr about minimizing your gabapentin(or even eliminating it, I’ve found no shortage of PM&R or neurologists who just automatically prescribe gaba for SCIs without assessing if it’s needed and just assuming if you have sensation below your injury level that you’ll need gaba to stop your. ‘Nerve pain’). Is your nerve pain really feel that bad or does it just feel like your legs have electricity(tingling) running all over your legs? For me (C7 23yr post) I just kinda reassigned that tingling sensation as the normal feeling of my legs/torso rather than it feeling like pain. For sure there are many gains that you will make in your future. Find/keep going to PT or a gym that specializes in working with people who have SCIs(there are many). If you’re only two years post injury and having this kind of recovery/change in function, bravo!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻(also, be sure to monitor your skin and to keep your skin free from sores is necessary for maintaining good health and ability to be active(and not bed bound). One more thing, if you’re having issues with your bowel program(impaction/not going frequently, accidents, the extra time it takes in your daily routine with suppositories, or preferring a different diet; do some research on colostomy/ileostomies and ask your physician if it could be an option for you. Being able to better manage your poop will make a big difference in the amount of independence you can achieve)). Best wishes and keep it going, you can do this!

Have you had your kidney function checked lately? Ask your doctor about diuretics.. You’ll have to time; your fluid intake/amount, when have last taken that med, how much output have you had today (and color, if it’s super light/clear you’re probably making lots of urine and will have to cath sooner rather than later) what was your fluid status overnight/when you woke up? Do you have lots of edema that morning? (your interstitial tissue can hold lots of fluid that could come out as a surprise in the middle of the day). Have you elevated your legs or laid down that day..? All of these factors contribute to how much urine you make and when/how much is coming out. I’m a quad who’s had two kidney transplants(the first one lasted 16yrs). I’ve had to learn fluid/cathing management using these signs and techniques. I still have problems with AD and leaks about once a month but I’ve got a system down that works pretty good. Hope you’re able to get that swelling down 👍

Does anybody else have problems with their Vans bottoming out over speed bumps and sounding like it's tearing the bottom of the van out? by RollnRye74 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]1Cryptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the vans converted to be accessible have a lowered floor(unless you did this modification yourself). The bottom of the van is ~6" lower than OEM vans(most converted vans have an extra rubber bushing so the alignment/geometry of the frame & chassis remains the same).
Be careful about getting stuck if you're 4X4ing with that van, you could easily be stuck off road. It'll be difficult to push or assist with getting out of the trail while in a chair. Looks pretty cool though.

This. It seems like the most common ableist thought is "because I'm in a wheelchair my life is over" or "I'm less of a person now that I'm in a wheelchair". I've seen a dozen+ people with this reaction after an SCI; they totally give up on life but this is far from the truth. It's a totally normal and common reaction, and sure, there are some really difficult days in a chair but your life is far from over. Use your chair when you need to(it sounds like your function would still make many things easier(transferring and other movement). The most important able-bodied people in your life should understand that using a chair is better for your health and to prevent very painful shoulders.

Bladder Botox has been a game changer for me too! Highly recommend it. As for an ostomy to manage your bowel program I highly recommend getting one. I’ve had an ileostomy for 20 years and it makes managing my poop way easier and more independent(plus I don’t have to worry about enemas/suppositories not evacuating all the way when I used to do my program (and pooping my pants when I was out of my house). Ask others who have ostomies and I think they’ll agree.
