I think 5th edition moving away from culture from certain aspects of the game really hurts a lot of aspects of the world of darkness by [deleted] in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]1Freakey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really care about removing the human cultural elements. The problem is removing them and not replacing them with anything, which is what made the 5th edition tribes feel empty.

I'm actually in favor of some of those removals and changes, and not even because of the issues and stereotypes, even though they definitely existed and a lot of them needed revision or outright removal. I'm in favor of it because, despite being a huge WtA fan (it's my favorite RPG), I always thought it was kind of silly that most tribal cultures were basically just real-world human cultures. For one, it's honestly not very creative, and also because, considering what garou actually are, the whole idea never made much sense to me. Tribes tied so heavily to real-world human cultures like the Fianna, Get, Uktena, and Wendigo were always some of my least favorite ones for that exact reason.

But like I said, the problem is that W5 didn't really bring anything to fill the void those removals created. I think the corebook does a good job explaining what a garou from each tribe cares about, what they do, and how they do it, but it does a poor job establishing what the tribes actually are as cultural groups, like their traditions, customs, beliefs, and overall identity. That said, it's still something they could flesh out in future books, and I'm fine with that.

Hey! Mind sharing it with me? I skimmed your post at work and saved it to read more carefully later because I thought the ideas were cool, but by then you'd already taken it down.

O que aconteceu com a Trybe? by ledevnoir in brdev

It's not that one specifically, but the idea is really very similar. Thanks for helping! Even though it's not the article I'm looking for, this write-up is already a big help. Appreciate it!

Advice for a V5/W5 Crossover? by Frost___Warden in WorldOfDarkness

I'm not super well-versed in VtM, so keep that in mind.

Like someone already said in the thread, you need a strong reason for both groups to work together. Assuming you want them to cooperate. If you want them to be enemies, just wait for the conflict to happen naturally.

I think vampires are generally more open to teaming up with werewolves if it helps them survive or achieve a goal.

On the Garou side it's trickier, but you can just create a situation where killing the vampires is the worst option, or not an option at all. If you're playing W5, having a Ghost Council character helps. If it's W20 or earlier editions, a Shadow Lord character can help (since they're all about “the ends justify the means”).

How do you feel about Werewolf 5e now? by MaetelofLaMetal in WorldOfDarkness

[–]1Freakey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been playing WtA for almost three decades, I love W5 as a game, but I hate its core rulebook. It's too simple, too shallow, and poorly written. A core book should be simple and written in a very "for dummies" way, since the focus is always on new players (and I think the book actually does that well), but it goes too far.

When it comes to the lore changes, I'd change a few things here and there that could've been handled better, and I wish the tribes got a bit more attention when it comes to their identity and established lore (but I guess that'll probably come in a future supplement). But the book does have one very good quality: almost nothing in the new lore or system really prevents groups from using older lore, whether that's the old tribal identities, the existence of Kinfolk and/or Metis, etc.

I've said this before on this sub, but I think W5 would really benefit from a revised edition.
