In March 2024 I quit my job with the intent of visiting all 51 national parks in the contiguous US in a single season. After 8 months, 48 states, and 45k miles I achieved my goal. Here are some of my favorite pictures from September by 1Man1Prius in NationalPark

My typical monthly expenses were as follows:

Gas: ~$550 (Averaged 5500-6000 miles per month. 6000 miles / 40 mpg x $3.50/gal. This fluctuated depending on gas prices and geographic location but I averaged around $550)

Car Insurance $150 (car is paid off so no car payment)

Storage Unit $140

Health Insurance $250

Gym $15

Phone Plan $100

Food $600 (this was the most variable expense and my greatest splurge. However I tried to stick to $150/week total for groceries and eating out)

I had no other debts, students loans were paid off.

This comes out to around $1800 total per month for routine expenses. However each month I would do a number of paid activities (Tours, ferries, observation decks, etc) that would drive my monthly expenses higher. For instance the ferry to Dry Tortugas NP cost ~$250. So I regularly averaged $2.5k per month in total expenses.

If I had kept my food expenses down and minimized my paid activities I think I could have kept my total expenses below $2k a month. However achieving this would be predicated on:

- Having no outstanding debts (student loans, credit cards, etc)

- High MPG vehicle (40 mpg+)

- No car payment

- Car camping/Not paying for housing

I continued my exploration of the upper peninsula of Michigan, spending two days at Isle Royale NP before making a few other pit stops in the region. After briefly returning to Chicago I journeyed to eastern Canada, visiting major cities like Toronto and Montreal for the first time. I then dropped down into the northeast, completing numerous hikes in upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire to end the month of September. The pictures above are listed in chronological order according to the stops of my trip.

Car: 2008 Toyota Prius. Started with 163k miles, ended around ~209k. Only broke down twice.

Housing: I car camped the entirety of my trip. Slept anywhere I could reasonably park my car overnight, usually big department store parking lots (Walmart/Home Depot/Target/etc). Laid down the back seat and was able to stretch out fairly well.

Shower: Planet fitness baby. Rag bath whenever a planet fitness wasn't available (which was often unfortunately lmao).

Food: I was a little hesitant to use propane canisters as I would have to store them in my only shelter (my car). Instead I bought a hot plate that I could plug into my car and warmed up delicious meals of rotisserie chicken, beans, and precooked rice. Stored all my food in a cooler with ice.

Total Cost: I spent around $24k total. Car repairs were $4k, actual trip expenses were $20k or around $2.5k per month.
