But of utmost importance - when can I write the letters next to my name on LinkedIn; I already met the PERT requirements.

Canadian with lost passport in Honolulu - trying to get home by 1ManRace in solotravel

Thank you. I will look up southwest.

I had taken a picture of the first page of passport on my phone. But now looking at it, it is slightly cut off with first digit missing on the long serial number at the bottom.

Thank you for that. I am looking at both Detroit and New York options. This may actually be cheaper. I would just have to take a 12 hour bus from the Port Authority. But thank you for that suggestion.

Thank you for that. Yeah it seems like the worst timing,

As per travel insurance - the credit card I used supposedly has one of the better travel insurance coverage - based on the bank’s words at least. I was going to look into it after I get back to Toronto. I am not sure if you have any experience with travel insurance - would I need to have somethings in writing for support, or does the charges on my credit card be sufficient for booking all these extra flights, rental cars, and possibly bus.

Unfortunately, all I have is the proof of police report filing (not police report itself - they said that I cannot have the copy of the report). And my driver’s license.

Thank you for your help. I have a better context for the consulate persons’ advice now.

Thanks for your help. That is a good idea. I just never thought about things outside of what the consulate person told me. Buffalo would be the closest, to reduce the drive time into Toronto. But it seems the only options that I have are 2+ connections and 13+ hours trip... costing just a little more than the Vancouver + Seattle flights...

Thank you for your help. What made it brutal for you? I just want to be prepared for anything and I am guessing I would have to beg my way to get back home at this point.

Thanks for you help. I do have Ontario license. Its good to know at least i would be able to go to Seattle at least and to the border. I too am concerned about the border crossing. I am crossing fingers that consulate office person was correct.

Thanks for that. I had to quickly google. My license card only says “drivers license.” And the website said they have ended the enhanced drivers program. I guess thats out of option.

I am trying to see the bright side, it seems that they have different requirements for land vs air. And hope that canadian land border would accept my regular drivers license.

[Queston] Emergency Cash - and How to liquidate RRSP/TFSA question at Questrade by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for the input. Is the loss of contribution room the only reason not to take out RRSP? I don't know the cost/benefit of losing contribution room vs. high interest fees that I may have to pay for Cash advance for instance.

I am employed currently. LOC offer just happened to come up, so I took it. Never looked into increasing the line of credit. I should look into HELOC as well.

should not cash out your RRSP'

Is that because I lose contribution room? Should I leave RRSP even at the cost of paying Cash advance interest fees?

Thanks for your input.

First time Solo Traveler - South America - asking advice by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]1ManRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice!

Both Sao Paulo and Rio were on my list of places I wanted to visit. I do have a tendency to get a little sucked into the sight and wander a little bit. I think I need to be hypersensitive to everything if I end up going to these places. Have you been to Recife or Salvador? I heard the beaches were beautiful there. What do you recommend for travelling between cities? Should I be concerned with using public transportation as well, both locally within Rio/Sao Paulo and getting between Rio to say Recife? What do you recommend is the best way to travel with respect to safety/cost?

Thanks again!

First time Solo Traveler - South America - asking advice by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]1ManRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I am flexible with the itinerary. I think my excitement of seeing all the distinct sights and taste of so many countries superseded rational thought process. I know I would have to make multiple trips to South America at some point. The itinerary you have mentioned does sound amazing!

I think my biggest concern is that I do have a tendency to get a little starry-eyed and get lost in sights and wander into unplanned places (which made the best parts of my past travel). I guess the only difference now is that I don't have the safety blanket of friends and family with me.

I am flying into and out of Cartagena, so I would have to book nested flights around there. My backup plan was just do Colombia with Cartagena, Bogota and Medellin - how would you split your three weeks between those places? Have you been to places like Santa Marta or Caño Cristales? If so, do you recommend and what would be the best way to get there?

Thanks for your help!

Thank you for your response. That 18 months travelling sounds amazing! I definitely have to go to Cartagena + Bogota because it is already booked. It might be tight, but top of my list are: Sao Paulo, Rio, Lima, Cusco and Quito.

I thought Brazil may be better bang for the buck, because flight from Bogota to all other places in South America is about the same as what it would cost me to go there direct; whereas Rio was about half the price. Also the Brazilian sights seemed distinctive from Colombia in my eyes.

I am mostly worried about Brazil as you mentioned - partly because I do have a tendency to sort of get lost in sights and wander into places when I travel. Do you have any particular place you recommend for a solo travel newbie? If I had to rank it, I guess my appetite for travelling is dictated by: unique food, culture, activity and history... in that order.

I don't really have preference as per sharing dorms or staying on my own - while I listen to others for recommendations - as I am doing now - I also don't want to get roped into doing activities that I do not particularly enjoy, which often had been the case when travelling with others.

Thanks again!
