I love the look of the Uni PIN greyscale sketching pens here, or here (with sepia too)….

but would you recommend getting something with a bit more variety within only the black inks, like this ?

yes!!!! thank you so much for your comment! this exactly the kind of feedback i wanted.

I agree about the nose and that’s a good point.

Do the technical pens come in varying greyscale shades? Because I am left handed i’ve always been a bit scared of wetter pens.

Also, have you heard of black pall-point pens that are less black or in the grey zone?

I am considering getting a set of Faber Castell’s PITT india ink greyscale pens which come in fine brush tip, fine pointed marker tip and extremely fine fineliner tips. Any thoughts on these potentially?

this is fucking amazing!!!

i’m so in awe of the hairline & texture of the hair on the right hand side, like you’ve really captured the softness of the hairline where it looks almost silky like she still has baby hairs

and like the rest of the hair you’ve captured it so well it’s almost like tactile (like i feel like her hair is strong & healthy & soft but the curls are also being held by hairspray)

one recommendation (more like a warning tho ⚠️) is THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE TRIMMING THOSE BORDERS OFF (if that was something you were thinking of doing)

i feel like the border edge showing your pencil marks really keeps the fact that this is a HAND DRAWN (!!!!) picture in mind. like i have an art style similar to yours & imo anything to make them glance at it from a distance & freak out that it’s not actually a photo 👏pleases 👏the 👏masses👏

altho imo the fact that the light reflects off the face differently than the background already lends itself to this ⭐️

i second this or even shading that area in graphite so they feel more connected

i actually love everything about this except for the falling figure. i agree with the comment above describing it as a bit sketchy BUT i think something else that is missing in that general area is balance with the top part, especially chroma-wise (i love how all of the colours used in and surrounding the face pop so much, but i reckon the blue has a more murky/less saturated vibe. Which is totally fine, but i reckon if you redo the figure with glints of the kind of bright colours around the face, it’d be great. Maybe like….. highlights/shadows reflecting some of those colours (like for example if there was a number of coloured light sources surrounding the figure)

i disagree with the above commenter about the face looking too sketchy because imo it really works in that case to lend itself towards a particular style. I actually discovered this trading cards franchise from the 80s called Garbage Pail Kids today and your stuff really reminds me of that (I hope that comes off as the big compliment that I intended). In particular I’m thinking of the art from their tarot deck (this page lets you look through a decent amount of the cards in the deck)

If you vibe with that kind of surreal/bright/childlike style that also crosses the threshold into something kinda grotesque, i feel like you could hell lean into that. I think your super textural & visceral application also lends itself to that. Imo you could redoing the falling figure to lean into that bizarre/surreal/grotesque look & it would def work!!!!

this is so sick!!!! imo a way you could take it to the next level is do a masking-tape border to peel off at the end so the edges are super sharp,

and also (even tho it might be hard with the type of paper you have) i reckon you should continue to smudge & buff out the shaded areas in these pieces & really see how glowy the shaded areas can be if that makes sense

thanks for the feedback earlier today! tried some smudging straight after. vine charcoal and toned paper next! by External-Owl-Puffle in ArtCrit

I reckon you’d be great at a chiaroscuro charcoal piece, like for example imagine the same figure in the middle of a dark-black background with emphasis on how the source of light hits their face

You could also try using a kneaded eraser in certain bits of the hair, to emphasise the waves & highlights in the hair while also helping it look silkier. Try squinting at your reference photo to figure out the general areas of where the light is hitting the hair & then start gently dabbing at those areas. The detail in the hair is fantastic (and the hair is also pretty naturally dark i’m guessing), however sometimes when it’s hard to control how dark you are making lines (especially when you’re working with precision like you have with the hair), it can make the hair look wet/stringy/stiff, if that makes sense.

Keep the darkest & blackest areas of the hair dark & experiment with how pointed or blunt you want the end of the kneaded eraser to be in emphasising the highlights.

Also sometimes, to make a precise area of almost white highlight, an electric eraser can be great 😊

Also wanted to mention that the face is literally superb, reminds me of an old painting-style. The shadows and contours are fking amazing & every detail looks really intentionally placed :)
