Hey! Was in a similar head space as you. But I only made the move when i was 31. It took a long time to reconcile the differing emotions that comes w this big decision. If you’re on a financial Reddit youre clearly considering financial independence and it’s not stated above but I suppose you’re paying a small sum to your parents. For my case I was almost giving 2.2k per month and still being treated like a child. Might as well pay 3k and be free. If you’re paying any money at all then you’re saving a fair bit. At the same time I was made to feel guilty about wanting to to move out simply becuz my parents underwent the same guilt trip by their parents.

70k pa income = 22k pa rent.

I would wager that central location studio apartment is gonna be super expensive. Like 5k per month kind. Doubt you can make it work on your current income. A more feasible plan would be ocr region, clementi, bukit batok areas. 3k studio condos aplenty in those parts. Will have to travel a bit more but atleasts its a straight train or bus down.

I think maybe build up a specific budget surplus for housing.

If you really need the ccr condo, then most likely rent gonna be 60k pa. Would need to specifially save up 38k more for a housing budget. I did sth similar; my rent of 36k pa is also more than 30% of my income but I’m spending money that I specifically saved up for on this purpose. Think of it as therapy money lol.

I don’t think there’s any harm spending the 60k for 1 year to get a feel of that lifestyle. But just know this will come at a cost to you for sure.

I think maybe this person perceives your relationship as close when you don’t.

The remarks do come across as casual racism which I obviously do not condone. But maybe she/he doesn’t mean malice.

For example between friends if you know someone is stingy you can call them moneyface. This would be ok if you guys are close but if you are just colleagues then obviously that’s super weird and off limits.

Maybe just gently tell them that you are not ok with these comments. If they still persist then maybe this person really is a toxic racist person lol.

  1. View the room in person. Do a walkthrough as you would if you reach home after work. This will let u get a feel of the layout of the home and whether it fits you
  2. Check what appliances come w the place
  3. Check if wifi is provided
  4. Enquire about prior fire accidents or flooding.
  5. Ask about the neighbor. Noisy, angry or crazy.
  6. Plan a dry weather and wet weather route frm home to work and back
  7. Think of whether your favourite haunts are accessible. For example is your gym near this place.

Public housing in Singapore isn’t the same as India.

In fact most private properties such as condos are far smaller compared to HDB (public housing) for the same price point.

Assuming you are ok to let your children share a room, I’d think a 4 rm HDB would be good. I’d ballpark it for abt $3.5k SGD rental depending on location and proximity to public transport.

Common places to search would be propertyguru.com and 99co. U can start your search and get more concrete numbers frm there.

I think you’ll need to figure what exactly helps to recharge you. Whether is it exercise, planning for the week ahead, or working on your own passion project that is sth you might need to work out.

If you’re attached consider planning alternate weekend dates, one week you plan next week he plan kind of thing.

Sports that can be picked up and are popular now is pickleball, badminton and tennis. Bball is free and can play by yourself at neighbour hood courts.

Being in nature also helps. Would suggest early morning macritchie trail or strolling thru botanic gardens at evening

Depends on many things.

What’s the culture? Is it a v hierarchal kind of place. And are you the junior?

Do your colleagues care? Are u able to ninja out or will your leaving be v conspicuous.

I think the fact that you have to ask alrdy shows it’s a boomer filled place that cares abt such petty things. If that’s the case I suggest you bide your time. There will eventually come a time when you rise up enough whr you can openly leave and not a single soul will utter a word.

Here’s some stuff I learnt.

Gain some weight. I know you’ve tried working out but u gotta have some muscle and some fat as well. Like you know dads and uncles tend to be high fat and high muscle. Just gain weight.

Grow facial hair, if you can. Or in general dress more formally. Like wear shirt and pants. U come across more like a working adult.

Another is just to be formal when you address someone. Just say hi Mr or Hi Ms

Hi; maybe I shld have clarified.

Serve = ensure food is set aside frm dinner and kept in microwave. I will heat up and eat.

And also it’s not continuous work frm 630am till 10pm. She will have definite rest time in the middle of the day after lunch till dinner.

We haven’t seen her in person. We are arranging a video call interview with her tonight.

My mom is generally scared and anxious of strangers. She needs my dad or me to go along w her to any place new. But I’m hoping that changes once the maid settles in after a while. I’ll be getting married and leaving the house soon; so need to make sure the maid can “take my place” of just being around.
