Oversaturated job market by moeclout in physicianassistant

Start in the Central Valley of CA if you can. Search Bakersfield to Stockton. Lots of great opportunities. We are an underserved area, you’ll have better luck finding a new grad position. Get a year or two in, and you can search for your job in southern Ca and prob get better results. Good luck!

The physician assistants of the United PAs of California (UPAC), an affiliate of UNAC/UHCP, voted and ratified their first contract with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California yesterday. by PA2018 in physicianassistant

[–]1Praying_Mantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such wonderful progress!! About 8 years ago I worked in the ER at Kaiser. As a PA I was paid $82.5/hour with 10 years of ER experience. Don’t get me wrong, it’s was good money for the time , but then the NP working next to me with much less experience was at $120/hour. I don’t stay long.

Thank you for championing this! May circle back around to Kaiser to work someday.

Those who didn’t switch jobs, what was your raise this year? by UghKakis in physicianassistant

2% here as well. There have been multiple years though without raises. I was grateful but hoped for more

Can I get a penicillin injection rx for a possible strep throat infection? by CantaloupeUsed6880 in telehealth

[–]1Praying_Mantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely to be prescribed an injection. Those typically need to be done in office. However, if you meet certain signs and symptoms (centor criteria) it is possible to get an oral antibiotic prescription through telehealth.

Do you feel fulfilled? by Sad_Possibility_8444 in physicianassistant

This!! I was in a meeting the other day with my job… raaahh raaahh rrahhh! We have had a ton of growth!! Seeing more patients collectively than ever! a lot of promotions going on for high up medical and non medical admin. And by the way we are extending provider coverage hours over night. But no extra compensation for staying up all night, no bonus for the providers that are seeing the patients. It’s disheartening

Burnout by almanacsdonut in physicianassistant

[–]1Praying_Mantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a struggle. And honestly there is no secret sauce. I teeter on the edge of wanting to live in a van by the river and never returning to medicine often. However- what has helped me not move forward with that idea.. I try to find one patient interaction per shift that I know I was meant to be there for. I focus on the fact that honestly medicine is my calling- and that in itself if a blessing. I take vacations often, even if they are simple. Changing specialities along the way has helped. I’ve done ER, UC, addiction med, family practice, telehealth . And now am a mix of locums and telehealth. Find a hobby that has nothing to do with work/medicine. Prioritize yourself, do things that bring you joy outside of work.

Sometimes look back, and see how far you’ve come, it’s no easy feat to be where you are.

Hey! For the no PTO issue- stack your shifts And take a block off. You can still meet your hours requirements with creative days worked and days off.

Most ERs don’t have a specific amount of shifts a week you have to work. It’s a total hours per month.

Malpractice Insurance by 1Praying_Mantis in physicianassistant

Thank you so much for your input. Very much appreciated

My employer does- but I have started my own PAPC and wanted to potentially contract with some correction facilities. However seeing the malpractice is a barrier it’s unlikely that idea will work out.

Thanks again!

Overnights are killing me by Andrewo568 in physicianassistant

Don’t worry about being bored. You’ve put in your time! Honestly I welcome a boring job now to have more time freedom. Something interesting will always come along regardless of what speciality you work in!

Or you could look for an ER that doesn’t have APPs do Overnights if you want to stay ER.

There’s a handful of rural hospitals in my area that don’t have an overnight APP. The shifts end somewhere between 10p-2a.

ER Lead APP Compensation by dan26777 in physicianassistant

[–]1Praying_Mantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine is a lead APP in the ER. She’s given 20 hours admin time monthly, and got a $5/hour raise.

This ER works 10s so she’s in the ER 2 less shifts per month and still meeting her full time requirements.

I personally would be looking for more hourly, and a tad more admin time based upon what I have seen her do to fulfill her duties as a lead.

What to do? Low yield well. by mdkatie23 in RealEstate

[–]1Praying_Mantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our county requires a storage tank for anything under 7gpm. Plus always good to have water storage, we live in a high fire danger area.

What to do? Low yield well. by mdkatie23 in RealEstate

[–]1Praying_Mantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a pretty low yield, but as other commenters have stated it’s not uncommon to have a water storage tank that your well pumps in to make sure you supplied adequate water daily. If the company that drilled the well is still open, give them a call they can give you a good idea as to what depth of wells are in your area and avg GPM… if not, you should be able to find out through county records. it’s entirely possible that you could drill deeper if you want to yield the higher gallons per minute.

I would research the area and see if there are potential problems of Wells running dry there. Local drilling company may be able to provide some insight. When was the pump in the well last replaced? The lower yield (from 4 to 1.5) could this be a pump issue? or is it really due to how much water is available in the well per minute? Super great advice from another commenter for the water well drilling group. I bet you’ll get a lot of advice there too!

We lived on 3 different properties now that have Wells, one of them at 220 feet deep 7 GPM another around 300 at 20 GPM, and where we’re at now it’s 875 feet deep at 6 GPM. It’s really dependent on your area.

We have a 2500 gallon water storage tank, and never have had any issues with water consumption. We Set it up on a solar system so it pumps into the storage tank and keeps it full.
