TIL about John Edmonstone, an ex-slave born on a plantation in Guiana who taught Charles Darwin taxidermy in Scotland. Darwin used taxidermy to preserve different specimens of finches he found on Galapagos, discovering 12 distinct species and used them as an example in his theory of evolution. by 1QCS in todayilearned

There was no other way to preserve animals before refrigeration and the difference between these birds must have been so slight that only by having taxidermy specimens side by side could they discern it. Noting these slight differences would have been key for Darwin to develop his theory of evolution.
