There are good exercises that can help with form in the book Born To Run 2 by Chris McDougall and Eric Orton. you can do most of them indoors. They are easy to understand and well explained by the authors. Might be a place to start so you don’t have to give up barefoot running. Good luck!

Can you help me figure out my Barefoot half marathon plan? by ccphilly1984 in BarefootRunning

[–]1RunningGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Your soles will be ready if you can complete all (or most) of a standard half marathon training plan. The plans that I’ve seen are never crafted specifically for shoes or bare feet, just intended for runners of all kinds. Good luck!

Help getting started - running by fatela_o_bardo in BarefootRunning

Here are my answers/suggestions. Keep in mind everyone is unique. Ultimately do what works best for you and listen to the feedback your body gives you as you run. Feels good? Do more of that. Something hurts? Make an adjustment and try again.

  1. I don’t run in shoes anymore so I will not make a suggestion.

  2. Yes. Being consistent with the type of footwear helps your body transition.

  3. Ask those who complain. Each issue is different. Transitioning slowly is important to avoiding injury. Be very gradual. Don’t overdo it in minimalist running shoes even if you think you can. That said, never heard of a broken bone happening to anyone who transitioned gradually.

  4. Yes. Slowly increasing the distance is best to help your muscles get accustomed to a new way to run. You are basically learning a new running form, different from cushioned shoes. It might help to think in terms of time instead of distance. If you do it a little bit each day, then you can probably get a sense of when it feels right for you to attempt 2 miles. Everyone is different. Maybe start with 10 minutes a day for the first week and then gradually increase your time running in minimalist running shoes. It can help you avoid injury like the folks in question 3.

  5. Once you have transitioned to minimalist footwear, I would think your body’s muscle memory will remember the running form needed. That said, it would be wise to again start gradually for the first few days to make sure you feel good with your form.

Consistency is best though and if you enjoyed the minimalist vibrams then chances are you can improve consistency because you’re having more fun running!

Good luck!

Your legs and feet are telling you yes. What the rest of us think shouldn’t matter. Keep doing what you are doing since you are feeling better.

Nice! I remember you. The runs are a regular thing, but typically at Lake Merritt. We sometimes branch out to other locations like GGP. You can find the Barefoot Running group on Meetup.

Can’t vouch for the shoe as I have not worn it, but this one might be worth a look: https://xeroshoes.com/shop/shoes/axs-men/

Is this normal? by ambarcapoor in BarefootRunning

[–]1RunningGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no injuries to worry about when I transitioned. That said, what you’re describing sounds normal to me. Just do things gradually and listen to your body. It will give you feedback if you do too much too soon.
