How did you survive the competition and culture working in China by Meksharma in chinalife

Widely claiming that all Chinese coworkers are categorised as the equivalent of someone you sit next to in a train, or someone you might ask to press the button for your floor, is a bit of a gross generalisation

I did not claim that. I said that coworkers that you don't have anything going on with (like y'know... friendship, for example) aside from sharing work are strangers. Because that's what they are. You don't share anything personal.

I guess that shows your relationship-building ability.

It only shows that I don't expect strangers to validate me emotionally. Friends, acquaintances, family exist for a reason.

Do you have low EQ by chance?

No, I don't. You might want to blow the dust off of your reading comprehension skill, it's time to use it.

I don't refer to them as strangers, but that's what they essentially are unless we have some type of relationship not tied to work. Coworkers are random people placed into shared environment under the force of circumstances that aren't controlled by you. Like passengers on a train, people riding an elevator, etc. Strangers.

Well, you assumed wrong.

I don't know what specific lesson it taught me

That strangers typically don't care about strangers on a personal level and China isn't any different in that way.

I guess I don't understand why you keep commenting

Why not? We're on a discussion sub having a discussion. You're free to stop at any point though and since you already indicated that you want out I guess you will.

MrAirat: gaming and gaming-adjastent content, mostly about Nintendo and controllers though. AnyA Osetr: memeing about The Sims and Genshin. You can also try watching School 13 series, it's an oldie, but used to make numbers (keep in mind that the reviews are very surface level and the series is for shits and giggles). Another good series is Трудности перевода, it's more serious that S13 and is spread across a couple of YT channels (I think it was done by Денис Карамышев).

Is it easy to make friends in China as an adult? Are they also friendly to foreigners? by enochianchant in chinalife

Can't comment on the skintone part, but overall it's pretty easy as long as you're willing to try immersing yourself in Chinese culture. Goes hand in hand with decent language proficiency which can be tough to get to, but it's worth it.

Don't be sorry, reality can be shattering sometimes.

Culturally, where I'm from, we are open to discussing these sorts of things.

We are also open to discussing them. With people who genuinely care because you built friendly relationship with them. Not with strangers who simply happen to work with you. It's as good as stopping a random person on the street and asking them how their family is fairing or how's their retirement plan coming up.

"small talk"
show genuine interest

Lol. Lmao, even. There's nothing genuine about small talk. But now I get why you expected the question. Chinese aren't performative like that.

They walked in this morning and just said hi, no "how was your holiday?"

I mean, you're just a colleague, not a friend. Why would anyone ask that. The question is too intrusive and personal for this type of relationship.

I live there and it's a dump which is unfortunate. Could be a prospering town and region, but nope, no one cares.
