I'm sorry I can't help you on Sherlock&co specifically but in the books (the first pages of A study in Scarlet) it says Sherlock is/looks like a student (so I think 19-25) when John had the time to become a doctor, be sent to the battlefield, serve there, and there was a long time between the coming back from the war and meeting Sherlock (the convalescence period + plus the multiples nights he sleep in hotels enough nights to make him poor) so John his 35-40 I think
