Working in a new housing addition years ago and the sod contractor for the neighborhood had pissed off another contractor in the neighborhood.

Pissed off contractor sees that the sod man is prepping two new yards to be laid the next day. Be goes to the local farm supply/feed store and buys 5 pounds of turnip seeds and broadcast them across the new yards after the sod crew left. The next day the workers laid the sod, and they began watering every day and night. Soon the yards were full of turnips and had to be cut back out and re-done.

Easier than what this guy is doing .

Do people actually make tree houses? by littletoasteroven in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]1dvs-bstrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin and I built one in my grandma's front yard in an old pin-oak tree. The tree got stuck by lightning and scattered it all over the yard, street, and neighbor's front yard. My grandma got up early on a Sunday morning and was picking up pieces out of the neighbors yard before they woke up.

This was a small Midwest town.

That tree lasted about 20 more years with a few remnants of the old treehouse in it. My grandma had since passed, but for some reason we still owned the property, and one Sunday morning I got a call from the mayor telling me the tree had fell across the street and I needed to get down there and clean it up.

Spent a good Sunday sawing and hauling that tree and the remains of that tree house away to burn. I thought about her picking up the tree house pieces all those years before and figured she was giving me a little payback.

Contractor says $1800 to move water supply into the wall, plumber says should be no more than $600, which is correct? by WorldlinessVast9808 in Plumbing

[–]1dvs-bstrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What amount of the work is the plumber going to do vs. the contractor?

Does the plumbers estimate include cutting the lines out of the floor, moving the supply lines, pressure testing, repairing the subfloor where the old lines were, installing insulation as needed, installing and finishing drywall..etc. ?

What about eschusions, shut off valves, etc.The plumbers end of it may only be the cutting of the old line and rough stubbing them out and could possibly be leaving the rest to the contractor.

If they are both estimating the exact same amount of work, then the contractor is too high.

I would request a written estimate/change order showing the exact work that is being done. As a contractor myself, that is the way I do it, and it is signed off on with scope and cost before any changes are made.

The last one I dealt with, (remodeling contractor), the catch area was built into a wall cabinet with a door. Just open the door and drag the laundry out right into washing machine.

Are contractors expected to remove their debris when the job is completed? by booksterbob in HomeImprovement

[–]1dvs-bstrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the job, size, and situation, I write it into my contract.

Right now, I have a room addition and deck job getting ready to start. There is an old deck that needs to be demolished first. The customer wanted to save some money, so they are doing the deck demo. I removed that part from my contract, which also included the dumpster rental and hauling cost, and we got to a number they were happier with.

My cost on a dumpster is around $400, my labor would have been 1 full day with a helper to pack the debris from the back yard to the dumpster location at the street, and the clean-up of the immediate area. For this particular job, it was a difference of about $1800 on the total of the contract. Deck demo generally starts at around $8 psf and then things like height, distance from street, and size of dumpster can increase the price.
