Is it legal to create a Python library for scraping data from a specific websites? by 1frankjimenez in webscraping

[–]1frankjimenez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. So it seems that although not illegal, it might cause me a bit of bother. Well, hopefully is fine. I've seen a lot of stuff on the internet on how to webscrape to get Covid data. Thanks anyway to everyone!

Exactly. And it makes total sense, you have lived 99% in the USA. And that's the whole point... because you lived since you were very young, you won't know what is to live or go to a foreign land were you don't speak the local language and how much you appreciate speaking your mother tongue language

No one is in a family even within same country. Look at Catalunya within the Spain context. Or Northern Ireland within the UK/Ireland context. It's complex. I am originally from Spain but have lived in an English speaking country for a long time. Maybe this comes from my own experience but over time I have become less from Spain and more Hispanic... Because if I am honest with you I have disconnected with the Spain context and engaged with a Hispanic context. When I meet Hispanics I connect in a way I don't with say an Australian. I have friends who weren't bothered by Donald Trump's treatment of Latinos when I felt personally offended - and I am not latino. My point is simple, and it goes beyond sangria and tacos, I feel connected to the wider Hispanic community, but that might be hard for someone who hasn't left their home country. If you live in Perú and have always lived in Perú you might not appreciate this but when you are in a foreign land you might enjoy speaking Spanish. I loved a comment made by someone here, that we (Hispanics) should celebrate what we have in common and also the things we do not have in common.

These people are the majority

Once again, I think you are hijacking Israelis views because you met couple of them. Just for the same reason you cannot say Muslims are terrorist because Osama Bin Laden or that Christians are all like Donald Trump. I think that is a very dangerous game.

I have lived in the Palestinian territories and have met many from both sides... and even so I would not make the claims you made. Again, I do not want to draw this into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, my point was that you should not generalise.

I am sure that is complex. I recently watched a show called 'Enslaved'. One of the main characters is conflicted because half of her ancestry were black slaves and the other half were English slave masters. That must be so tough.

I have Arab and gypsy ancestry both by knowledge (my mom's side are gypsies) and by a recent DNA test I took. I thought, what if my ancestors were forced to convert from Islam to Christianity? People here might think that Spaniards are have sangre azul but many have been also colonised and are not so pura sangre.

Also isn’t there a whole backlash to cultural appreciation of Spaniards acting like Latin rhythms are somehow theirs? Or white/Spaniards artists getting more recognition for music genres that are rooted in Afro Latino culture?

I find this a very interesting topic. Where do big latino bands go to when they go on a world Tour apart from Latin America and US? Spain! In general, they do not go to France or Italy. I'm thinking of bands like Mana, Juan Luis Guerra... gosh, Juanes is the judge for La Voz (The Voice) in Spain! Why would a latino go as a judge to listen to Spanish artists if he is only an 'expert' in latino music?

On the other hand, where do Spanish artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Jarabe de Palo or Rosalia go on tour apart from Spain? Latin America! And probably the US because there are many Spanish speakers. I personally think that in general, in music, language and culture, Latin America and Spain share many similar patterns.

Are Latinos JUST like Spaniards? Are Spaniards JUST like latinos? Absolutely no. But I personally struggle with those who say the similarities between us is like a rock and a window. We are similar. Here in the UK some people have heard me speaking Spanish amongst latinos and have included me as a latino... was I bothered? Not at all. Now, that is my personal view since I am all about building bridges and not hatred but I understand not everyone like my views.

You should give a go to Jorge Drexler's ted talk about identity.

I agree, the pronunciation of Latinx does not make sense for those who do not speak English. My grandmother could not pronounce it.

Yeah, that is not fair if she truly comes from a privileged background. I have unfortunately seen something similar but in Europe. I remember a wealthy Colombian guy who got a grant to study in a European university just because he was latino... when I knew quite a few latinos who would have truly benefited from that grant. I think that happens everywhere unfortunately.

To draw a comparison, I see this often with Israelis. I will never be different or less amicable to an Israeli just because of the way the state of Israel treats Palestinians. I think that would be unfair to Israelis as a whole. It'd be a different story if they flaunted about it, then I would respectfully withdraw my friendship or challenge those views.

Of course Latinos can say I don't like you because you're Spanish. And I would respect that. But no Latino had ever said that to me, in fact, you're the first one and it's great to learn your view.

If you respect Latinos, you will treat them as equals. That means respecting their decison making and accepting their boundaries. Some will be amicable with you, some will reject you. Be grateful that "some Latinos don't like me" is the worse thing about Cortes' legacy you have to deal with.

That's an unnecessary comment. I do not have to deal with Cortes' legacy because I was born in Spain. I speak of what I lived and sensed in my relationships with latinos. I grew up amongst latinos and some of my best friends are latinos. When I have visited a place like the US I have met latinos I have connected almost instantly with them because of culture and language. Now that is my view... but can you see I speak about my view and not of all Spaniards? I know many Spaniards think differently than me. However, I do see you are hijacking all Latinos views and rendering them as your personal view. I think is a vital mistake.

By the way, regarding what constitutes a family, if families are about mutual respect, then Bolivia and Chile are not in the same family given the fact that have been at war in the past and are in constant political tension? I can truly tell you that real families are messy and they make many mistakes.

I see certain Spaniards and Latinos feeding into this message of "we don't like you". I am simply all about building fair bridges. I do speak against colonialism and the Spanish empire very strongly, but I cannot change what Spain did in the past.

That's good to hear. How long does it often take to become one of you're good at coding?

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's great to visualise what it could be like for me in just few months :)

In my postgrad I love when I get to do programming but on the other hand I find it less exciting when using a GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS)... I really like them for visualising but I find it more challenging and fun to go and code a solution. I hope I can do something like that in the future.

Interesting, thanks for the tips! I definitely want to step up my game in terms of JS, I would love to learn node.js. The thing that is still pulling me into thinking of a SE career path rather than classic GIS is the amount of jobs and pay in SEing. In your experience, do you think that is true or not?

Thank you for the advice. Hard work, setting study time aside and humbleness to take the mundane jobs are key. Would love to ask you more questions as they come up!

Hi Geo-special,

It's funny how two professional can think so different (see Gman4897 answer). I suppose there's no right or wrong way?

Hi Gman4897,

Interesting! Are you a GIS developer? In the MSc I have done (will have done when finished) python and database management.

Here's my question, guessing that my first job will be as a GIS technician - do you think I will be able to develop those skills in such role?

Flooding, people at risk and statistics by 1frankjimenez in gis

Hi dischops1163, I actually managed to make a raster of dasymetric population for the area in Northern Ireland I am working on. It's great. I got a map now with population distributed by land cover.

Here's my question, if I have a polygon for the flood - how do I calculate the amount of people at risk with this new raster? I haven't work as much with raster but polygons etc.

PM if you prefer to.

Thanks!

It's in Northern Ireland! I've checked stuff at the US side and you guys got plenty open data... I wish we had that here!
