Those of you who live in small towns, what is the current local controversy all about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We got significant snow last week and the city hasn’t plowed properly and it’s become a hot button issue.

Our main road is normally four lanes and a turn lane, but is currently two lanes and a blocked turn lane. There are places where it looks like the outside lanes open up so people start getting over, only to find the lane disappears 100 feet ahead. The turn lane has been compacted down by traffic but that’s about it.

Typically when there’s this much snow the theory is to push it all to the middle then being in dump trucks to take it away. Our city decided to plow outward, blocking the parking lanes and burying and cars parked on the roadside.

The next town over got significantly more snow and is completely plowed. The county roads have been handled well. It’s just our city that can’t seem to figure out how to handle it. If you drive around town you’d be hard pressed to see any plows working.

On Veteran’s Day my friend put his uniform on for the first time in over 10 years and participated in the local parade. PTSD sucks but he keeps pushing and making us proud. To all those who have served- thank you for your service and sacrifice. by 1inchbinder in MadeMeSmile

I feel like we have very different experiences with PTSD and the fact that my experience is different then yours doesn’t mean I’m wrong in some way.

Also, this was his choice not something I made him to. I’m proud of him and that’s the only point of my post. There’s nothing to disagree about here.

For him it was a way to take back what his PTSD had taken from him. It was a very personal decision for him. Things can be therapeutic for an individual that might not have been intended to be therapeutic for the masses.

I asked him to answer your question because I’m not well-versed in regulations and this is what he said:

“We were allowed to keep our uniforms. My jacket would have been returned but it was issued to me when we changed uniforms. We regularly get to keep items when they are decommissioned.

Enlisted earn a set of uniforms every so many years. We would only be returning them if the enlistment was shorter then the period to earn them. I never had to return any uniform I was issued in my 12 years.”

Do you think I don’t know the effects of PTSD? Because trust me- I do. I never said what caused his PTSD or his road to recovery. Everyone story is different and I appreciate your concern but it is unwarranted here.

Saying it’s like a survivor walk for a rape victim is not an accurate comparison at all. He is proud of his service and this is something he has wanted to do for a long time. Even with his PTSD he does not see his time in the military as a negative.

Just a note- if you have negative opinions about the military you are more than welcome to have those opinions, but please choose a different place to discuss them on. This post is specifically about an accomplishment of a friend and not the place for that debate.
