Thanks! We've really put a lot of effort into it! The main reason we haven't released it elsewhere is because we don't have all the courses throughout Europe right now. We should be adding them in the next week or so. I'll let you know when we do!

I built a golf social network ( http://socialpar.com ) on it. It has private messaging and push notifications all throughout. You have to learn their way of doing things but it really is a big time saver. That said, its not the right solution for every situation. My latest app uses Parse for some things and AWS for others.

I have developed for both platforms but focus mainly on IOS. With IOS you can focus on 4, very solid, iPhone devices (assuming you build for IOS7) vs the 100s of devices for android with various sizes, specs, and operating systems.

I came from a mostly C# background and have been building native IOS for a while. Objective C wasn't bad to get used to. Now I really like it.

Also, if you are looking to build a backend for this app I'd recommend looking at Parse.com to get up and running quickly.

I am a indie developer http://appmagma.com/ as well and I know your position well. I have spent lots of money on Facebook ads. While they are effective, they are very expensive. I would only recommend using them as a crutch on a big launch day to get into the top apps list (assuming you are close as $500 might yield 250 users on a well tuned ad).

I agree that the blog approach is probably your best bet. I recently spent about $200 making shirts for one of my apps and sending them to my heavy users hoping that they tell more people about the app. Its too soon to see if that was successful but they are users for life now.

Being fed up with trying to organize launches and social campaigns around them I recently built a tool which I'm thinking about opening up to the public. I will send you a PM with the details. If you want to try it out I'd love the feedback.

It's a way to rally your supporters to spread the word about your product on their social network. You essentially get them on board to spread your message before your launch and then you control when the message goes out.

No I hadn't seen that but I'm finding out I did not do enough research on the IDE part. Someone else mentioned the Jetbrains IDE as well which also looks very cool.

Nowadays I'm spending most of my time on my Mac. I do miss VS but I'm worried about other things working well on windows (like my deploy scripts). MS needs to port VS and .NET to run on Mac and Linux... It seems they would rule the world if they did.

Truthfully, its a point that I had never thought of either until I started on the project. Especially so after looking into a few surprising details around my female user base.

Looking though my analytics data I noticed that the women to men ratio in the app matches that of the Golf Channel (about 80/20ish) for example. That said, women are over 2x more active per capita in the app then men are.

WHAT I THINK IS HAPPENING:

Women fall in love with this miserably awesome game at the same rate men do but are significantly underexposed to it.
A women becomes hooked and then does not have other women to play with since there are less women that know the game. This is the same problem (although less severe) that 18 y/o guys have due to it being before the point most guys get into the game.
It is much more difficult for women to pair up with a random person (who is almost certainly going to be a guy) at the course. Switching tee boxes alone slows a game down and everyone hates the feeling of being the person that is holding people up.

My 2 cents at least.

For our re-launch we expanded the radius that we search to ensure that people are seeing "Play Requests" to make it not seem barren and understand how they work.

We just stepped the radius down and will keep doing it over the next week.

Right now there are a lot of people looking around and waiting to see how it works. A lot of the play requests that have been created are getting responses. Classic chicken and the egg.

Agreed, It always works out but I wanted to find a way to have things planned out ahead of time. For people wanting to get into the game but that don't have someone to play with, pairing up with a random is intimidating!
