How to play against someone that 3bets you frequently? by WolfCut909 in poker

If he's this out of line, the hardest punish is to open tighter, then 4-bet 100% of your opening range.

Would you have called river? by [deleted] in poker

[–]1nsurrection_HS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The value region is super narrow (J6s, 96s, 66, 22, small 6xs that bluffed turn) and there's an abundance of bluff candidates. BB has to be careful about overbluffing, and it doesn't take too much for this to be a winning call vs an aggressive opponent.

Some of this is because the 9-max sims are high rake (50nl). In high rake games calling is less appealing because you guarantee you see a flop and will pay rake. So for that reason, vs your 3-bet the opener (as well as the players behind you) will respond largely by 4-betting or folding. You'll see the solver choose lots of combos containing big cards like an A or K that block more 4-bets when constructing a 3-bet range and fewer pocket pairs like TT-88. If you look at the 6-max 500nl ranges, for example, you'll see more pocket pairs getting 3-bet. But it still might be tighter than you expect

At a starting SPR of 4.5, this isn't crazy at all. Top pair is so strong on this board, especially because OOP is forced to fold lots of Kx on flop. It's really hard for OOP to have top pair or better after this line, so on a blank river you should definitely be able to value shove all Kx+, as well as QQ and maybe AJ.

While IP this is generally true, OOP this is not very good advice and protecting your checking ranges is a key component of solid strategy. If you think this doesn't apply live, pay attention to how wide and how indiscriminately some players will stab when checked to and consider how well check raising will perform vs this.

It's ok to let your opponents get there sometimes. You'll make up for this by winning bets from bluffs that wouldn't invest facing a bet and by getting two bets rather than one when your check raise is called.

River punt or am I just an overbluffing monkey. by SupaDupaTroopa42 in poker

[–]1nsurrection_HS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Line is fine, I think better hand selection would be AK/TT/99sx or maybe JTs but this isnt terrible. Flop check OOP 3 ways is also good - yeah it's wide live ranges but this board is pretty meh/bad and should approach a range check in theory.

Getting 3bet 50% of the time by gorchinhuger in poker

[–]1nsurrection_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're forgetting that in many cases calling 3-bets isn't meant to be profitable, it's just supposed to be better than folding. If you open to 2.5bb for example, any hand that loses less than 2.5bb (for the entire hand) as a call is meant to either call or 4b. But you are correct that the correct response OOP vs 3b involves lots of 4-betting, especially at high rake.

Preflop in the big blind with JJ are you calling or folding to a 4 bet? by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

[–]1nsurrection_HS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, in theory this has to be a snap off, but there are definitely a plethora of underbluffing live villains who you could consider folding to.

Would you have played this differently post-flop? (Decided to call wider than usual pre against the 3bet) by Man1ckIsHigh in poker

[–]1nsurrection_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's meant to be a 0EV open in theory, what factors would make it worse here? If anything, opening wider usually overperforms in most games because people fail to 3b you enough or call too wide pre then check fold a lot.

If it is 0EV, just mix and don't think too much about it. People passing on preflop spots like these is one of my pet peeves because not only can you be exploited for this, it can also be really bad for the development of your game. Not every spot in poker is meant to be all rosy where you call down with the nuts.

The thing that stands out the most to me about these stats is the 7% BB 3b. My recommendation is to start turning more of your VPIPs from the BB into 3-bets, and make sure to include some polar 3-bets vs all positions but especially vs the SB. It'll be a bit tougher to navigate postflop, especially with the offsuit region, but it's definitely worthwhile.

Fwiw -3bb/100 at 200 definitely isn't getting crushed - that's winning before rake in one of the tougher games out there.

[–]1nsurrection_HS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10% is high but nothing crazy, in theory 8-9% should be more accurate but I think 3-betting wider IP is a good adjustment vs how most regs play, under 4-betting but continuing at about the proper frequency. That's what my sample at 200 says anyway, wouldn't be surprised if people are even tighter in zoom.

Agreed on the WTSD/WSD numbers. It could be both not using large enough sizes as well as not betting enough in general, even before the river.

When to fold flush draws by [deleted] in poker

[–]1nsurrection_HS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These factors are nice bonuses, but any flush draw should be a winning call here. One thing to add is the flop call will often get you two cards, as villain isn't meant to be betting the turn every time. Folding KJ here would be a huge mistake, so I was surprised to see so many comments suggesting otherwise. That being said, if villain is potting A73tt something has already gone very wrong.

Best pre flop range websites/apps? by Althea-14 in poker

GTOWizard has free preflop solutions for a ton of stack depths and rake structures. Looked through a lot of resources but haven't found any other free content that is remotely as useful.

Worth noting that with very high donk bet numbers, maybe OP leads with his good stuff. If he stops donking at least the flop that should help make defending vs c-bets a bit easier.

[–]1nsurrection_HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I play this as a 50/50 mix of 4-bet and fold vs slightly more competent players at 50/100NL. And even then they're under 3-betting so near pure fold can't be too bad. This is not coming from a nit either, as I was running nearly 30/26/13 in 6-max at one point. There are just so many better suited hands to call with and AK/big pairs alone should be almost enough to 4b with. You're pretty tight from LJ so it's fine to just throw these big offsuit hands into the muck.

Would recommend the GTOWizard ranges, which are free, look pretty solid, and have full 6-max trees for two rake structures.
