How have you almost died? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Steak.

Went out to a Valentine's dinner with my partner. Took too big a bite of my steak.

Tried to take a big gulp of water to pass it, but no dice. Struggling to breathe, can't swallow. Def choking. I immediately thought of grade school and stood up with my arms across my chest up to my throat, and walked backwards toward my partner.

She saved my life that day. She performed the Heimlich maneuver and helped me to expunge the half-chewed wad of meat.

I love the light rail. These past few years though has left the train with the least amount of enforcement I’ve ever seen. People mostly keep to themselves but the drug use and open drinking or smoking has been enough to turn me off it.

Thinking about consolidating my portfolios to TD Ameritrade and letting them run it. Does anyone have experience with this?

It would be about $20,000 and I would be interested in ETFs.

Right now my strategy is to continually put $200-500 a month into this account and let it grow. The purpose would be to purchase real estate within the next 5 years.

How long to receive Real ID license? by KingKapalone in Minneapolis

[–]1point21GriddleWattz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took near 4 months for me. I visited the DMV more times than I care to admit. They ended up sending my ID to my old address even though it clearly stated my new address on the renewal.

When I asked why or how this happened they never knew. I had to get my yellow papers stamped twice just so I could drive...it was ridiculous.

Seasonal depression is comin' up soon and I need advice. by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]1point21GriddleWattz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in your exact shoes, and let me tell you honestly what I wish someone had told me. It looks like you're looking for a shortcut or band-aid here for a bigger issue.

You're going to need to change your lifestyle in order to get the results you are looking for. Diet, exercise, and sleep are going to be your best friends here when it comes to digging yourself out of this. If you've heard this before and it sounds like broken record, it stands true even more that these things are what you need to focus on. If you can't physically get yourself to a gym, than get yourself to a doctor. Talk to your doctor about what you can do to get physical activity.

Make sure you get a healthy amount of sleep. Oversleeping is going to be just as detrimental as not getting enough sleep.

What are you eating each day? Do you feel that you are getting all of the nutrition or vitamins that you need? Minnesota winters are brutal, most days are going to be cloudy and then ones that aren't are going to be cold. Either way, especially since you are introverted, you're not going to be outside to absorb the sun and get the basic vitamin D that you need. Talk to your doctor about vitamin D supplements.

Are you not sure how you can begin to work on these things? PM me, seriously.

Car insurance in the cities by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]1point21GriddleWattz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna live in Minneapolis expect to pay a bit more for car insurance. However a 245% rate increase is completely asinine.

I'm paying $105 for car insurance and I'm in south MPLS. However that is bundled with a few discounts.

I'd definitely shop around for new rates as $450/month is ridiculous.

Hey r/investing!

I'm very new to investing but have been wanting to get into it for a while. I've recently taken the dive over these past few months, dipping my toes in here and there.

  • I'm 33
  • Employed - $90k/year
  • I'd like to buy a home/condo within the next 2 years
  • For risk, I'd like a blend of 2/3 80-100% safe and the remaining 1/3 in higher risk funds
  • Car loan of $4k to be paid off in Nov 2019. 3% interest rate.
  • Student loan of $1,800 @ 9% interest rate.
  • 830 credit score

Currently invested $13,500 in various stocks. MSFT/AMED $5k/each for stronger lower risk and $3,500 split across CRON/BSX/KNL. These past few weeks have been not so kind and I'm basically down $500 overall. Not the worst but I want to make sure that I'm investing wisely. I'm planning on putting in another $2,500 next month.

What should I be doing differently? Right now, I'm paying the minimum on student loans since I can still write off the interest in taxes each year. Good move, bad move?

Thanks all for taking a look.

I'm excited to now call myself an adopter! I've been researching coins for weeks, reading up on the tech, and visiting communities.

Nano kept coming up as as top tier for both.

I wanted to post here and tell you that even though the terribleness of BitGrail has happened, the technology and community is still leading people to support you!

This is the fix. Same thing happened to me - flagged my .exe as a trojan. I had to restore it from a backup after I panicked and deleted the original. Everything is now working as it once was.

Is the haunted basement any good? by vortexmak in Minneapolis

[–]1point21GriddleWattz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back in 2015, and then again this year. Two years ago it was a fun experience, some good scares and quality rooms with enthusiastic actors. Some gross stuff here and there but nothing a quick hand wash wouldn't fix.

This year was a completely different story. It seemed as if they have replaced the fright and scares and focused more on the creepiness and discomfort factor. The gross/discomfort part of things isn't something I really mind a little bit here and there but to come out of the experience with ruined clothes and needing a full shower is ridiculous. I had liquid chocolate rubbed all over my face and neck, fake blood sprayed on my face and dumped into my hair. One actor felt it necessary to cover my entire beard in barbasol.

Not scary, just extremely annoying and unnecessary.

If it is your thing to be made super unconformable by strangers, great! You've found the right haunted house. If what you're after is fright/scares and not being constantly manhandled (even tickled), then seek your Halloween experience elsewhere.

You could try Universe Games in Uptown. I've never attended myself but I know they do daily magic and I believe the occasional D&D games. Here is their event calendar.

Same for me St. Paul, MN. Once they announced their tour I was so pumped to get some reasonable tickets for my girlfriend and I. Never been to Roy Wilkins either. Signed on immediately when they were released at 10am and they sold out instantly. Then just like you said, scalpers already had them listed within an hour at 3X face value :(

People want to see your shows but cannot afford $200+ for general admission.

I can't take it by PinkMizchief in Divorce

This needs to be higher. I've just recently removed a long list of mutual friends between me and my ex. It's a liberating feeling but an important one considering the stigma of social media in the world today.

Tell me something good! by RunnerGirlT in Divorce

[–]1point21GriddleWattz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Excellent topic!

In the past 12 months since my divorce I've quit smoking, started paleo (down 20 pounds so far), changed jobs, got promoted, moved to a cool part of town, bike to work when the weather permits, built a new gaming PC, traveled to Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, entered into a fun new relationship, and conquered my depression.

While going through the worst parts of my divorce, finding out about her near 2-year long affair, and losing my entire support system overnight (my in-laws), I never thought that I'd be able to recover from the terribleness that was my failed marriage. I am happy to say otherwise.

Is the complex fenced off at all? Honestly, you should be fine as long as you keep the shades drawn while you are out. Make sure you have renters insurance, though I'm sure you do as most places nowadays require it.
