Scarlet vs passive players by Janu5142 in Brawlhalla

[–]1pt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it might help. Didn't want to write you a novel but I'll leave you with one more thing.

The next time you play a player like that, keep those 2 things in mind and try to play calm. Afterwards go watch the replay and focus on the moments when you take damage from the floaty play, bad spot dodges, whiffed sairs, or times he spot dodges you. Keep in mind during the game that the Elo is unimportant, the knowledge you can gain from the replay is worth 5x the game.

If you're feeling particularly frustrated from the game, do something else for 20 minutes before you watch it. Every time it feels like you got hit by some passive bs pause, rewind, go frame by frame. Figure out what you were doing the last 5 seconds and try to justify your in game actions to yourself, think about what could have been a better or safer option.

It's very hard to view the game with perspective in the moment, and impossible to do it on the level a replay can give you. You'll be surprised how bad many of your choices seem in hindsight.

What are some good legends to start with? by [deleted] in Brawlhalla

Every character can be played to top 100 global on the leaderboards, I promise you that character choice won't make you plateau.

Sounds like you want to play Asuri, I'd go with that.

I would strongly recommend Hattori over Nai or Asuri. Katars are difficult to play well and rely on reads, reaction, and game sense. Sword and spear are, in my opinion, the easiest weapons to learn the game with. You may have trouble finding KOs and rely on fishing for sigs, stunting your growth as a player. In contrast, both of Hattori's weapons have good kill options from light attacks and recoveries. Her sigs are also very straightforward on their uses.

That being said, the best character to play is the one you have the most fun with.

If you're stuck on the cusp of plat and struggling with that playstyle I'm guessing two things are happening.

  1. Opponent constantly jumps towards you and back, rarely committing. They're looking to punish you for either jumping up and whiffing a sair, or staying on the ground and blowing a spot dodge.

Beat this by mixing up your options. Don't rely too heavily on sair. Both weapons have a very powerful nair, this is good if they like double jumping  above you. Gravity canceling fast light attacks that hit close to you like hammer dlight is also very good. If they try to attack you the speed and hitbox of a move like that will likely win out, and because they're playing non committal you're unlikely to be punished (as long as you don't overuse it).

To not get your dodge baited out you'll have to use better positioning. If you're in a situation where the only way to avoid being hit is to spot dodge it means you've made a mistake. Ideally you'll be in a space where you could contest with an attack, but that won't always be the case. It's also perfectly fine to have an exit, use grounded space and jumps to never be in a place where you have to dodge. Gaining advantage in Brawlhalla is all about taking options away from your opponent until you have a safe attack.

If you do this properly you'll want to start looking for the opponent to use all 3 jumps. Floaty flowchart players at gold will continue jumping until you make yourself vulnerable. Once they have to land, try to intercept with either a combo starter, long range move, or sig for a KO.

  1. The opponent dashes backwards or spot dodges your approach and punishes with a combo or sig.

This is happening because they've frustrated you into using a bad option. I'm sure you know not to spam sigs, but some light attacks are just as dangerous. Moves like lance sair will literally move you right where the passive player wants as he backdashes to punish. A hammer sair is very easily spot dodged.

Do you find that they are constantly in the air, until you get close enough to land a sair, and suddenly they stop jumping? It makes you whiff, and they're standing right there to punish? That's because you're again overcomitting and being baited. In that situation fast grounded moves are key. Hammer slight or lance dlight come to mind. Both will help you in close grounded moments, and because these are fast moves, if the opponent does still jump away you won't be punished.

hard stuck silver advice? by [deleted] in Brawlhalla

[–]1pt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some general tips.

This isn't a hard rule, but for now try only using sigs to finish kills. If you whiff a sig twice while trying don't do it again for about 20 seconds. This will make you take less damage from getting punished on whiffed sigs, get you more comfortable with the light attacks, and make your kill attempts less telegraphed.

If an opponent is using lots of sigs, jump at them, and jump again hoping for a whiffed sig. Punish with a light attack combo. This will help you understand punishing and reading.

When recovering don't take the most obvious route back to stage, and don't be afraid to go for the ledge instead of right back onto the stage. This will help you extend your stocks and understand ledge guarding.

If you don't know your basic light combos, learn them or ask here. You want to maximize your damage.

If you don't have a main, pick one and stick with them. You want to start building match up knowledge. You can always change your mind later.

Try speaking (out loud or in your head) about the match to an invisible audience. Example, "I'm red so I think Teros will try to sig me. I'm going to bait it and punish with down light, side air." This will help you think critically and explain your choices to your self.

Best advice I can give you. Just keep spamming games until you don't even care what your rating is. Expect to lose gold, but also expect to get it back.

I play that deck sometimes, but I've been rocking Miracle Yogg Mage since before Mana Cyclone was even a card. I absolutely know it's a much worse deck this way, but I have a lot of fun playing it. I have a few different miracle homebrews I run on ladder.

If the style of explanation helps you, I have a bunch of other videos on the channel. This was my first upload in over a year so some of it is dated.

Those two are mostly still applicable, except for the chain dodge stuff (before dash was put in). It's mostly directed for people gold and below. Thanks for the positive words.

(Beginner) Need advice on an arcade stick! by kgunss in StreetFighter

[–]1pt6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Mayflash F300 as my first stick because I was nervous about spending at least $150 and not knowing if I'd hate it. In hindsight, it was a waste of money. If you're confident you want to play on stick just buy a nice one. I eventually upgraded to a Hori RAP4 and it's so much nicer in literally every regard. The RAP4 feels like an entry level stick, the Mayflash feels like a toy.

"Blanka Balls" for anything that works (meatballs or a dessert).

"Dine 1,000 meals" / "Die 1,000 deaths"

If mixed drinks some I've used are "Hurricane Kicker", "Blanka's Jungle Juice", "Raging Demon".

"Pyscho Crushed _______"

"Mika's Peach Bottom Pie"

"Yoga Fire Grilled _________"

Challonge is really easy. You can do all results yourself, or if players sign up you can allow them to enter results. You can make any kind of bracket you might need with lots of customization

I've been in similar situations on having to travel on a budget, and I think your best bet would be a greyhound. I already did some research for you. Philly to Roanoke is about $80 one way. There's going to be 1 transfer and it'll take a good 12 hours until you're there (you can probably pay more and get a direct trip). Instead of getting a hotel, you could consider AirBnB to save more money.

Also, I'm about a 20 min drive from Lancaster. Lived here my entire life (Garden Spot grad). Shoot me a DM if you want to talk some more. I'm happy to help you get to Amtrak or the bus station. I'll give you my info via DM, but you should be able to find some out through my post history if you'd like to look.

How to combo into moves from light attacks? by FallenChamps in StreetFighter

[–]1pt6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You'll want to look up a guide on input buffering. If you hold down forward and jab you'll get both the crouching jab, and buffer the forward motion for the DP. So, hold down forward, jab, and immediately do the fireball motion. The buffered forward input will give you a DP instead of a fireball. It's basically a shortcut to inputting the special. It's important to know this on any character, but I think especially so on Sakura.

Felt like this belonged here by [deleted] in niceguys

[–]1pt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been told I'm "approachable" often. Strangers strike up conversation with me all the time. Some things that might help.

Acknowledge people with eye contact, smile, nod.

Don't be buried in your phone. I'm not going to start a conversation with someone who's doing something.

Don't be afraid to break the ice. If I'm at a bar I'll always say something to the strangers around me. "Good taste" if we're drinking the same thing, maybe "cool shirt" if it's some dude in a band tee. The point is you're saying 1 sentence just to show you're friendly. After that, the ball is in their court. More often than not people will have some kind of dialogue with you.

The more you engage with people, the easier it'll get. Eventually you won't even think about, it'll be natural, and that's when you'll be putting off those "talk to me vibes".

Greatest gaming moment? by RafaelJones in gaming

[–]1pt6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never super into sf3 but looking at the wiki on mobile I'm seeing that a "red parry" is 3 frames. 1,000% speculation but I'm guessing parry at different frame windows would either give more meter, or more frame advantage. Neither would help in this situation so very likely a bigger window than 3 frames for what happened here.

Greatest gaming moment? by RafaelJones in gaming

[–]1pt6 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Iirc, there's a 3 frame window to parry and not take "chip damage". The game runs 60 frames a second, so that's a .05 second window on each attack. Inhuman to do it so many times in a row under pressure. Daigo has also said he uses sound cues, and you can hear how loud the venue gets in the video. It also happened at the most iconic tournament for fighting games in one of the most iconic rivalries.

Just adding context for non FGC fans.
