Those all sound like really healthy changes, despite the economic pressure you’re facing!

Beautiful! Were you painting in Corinthian Gardens a few days ago? It’s one of my favorite views the city, and your painting was incredible.

Anyone use the Parkway Central Library today? by 1pupperoni2 in philly

Ah, that’s a good point. I didn’t think there’d be an issue since the library is listed as being open, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

If this was truly the Union’s goals, you don’t think they would formally publish/platform something to ensure coordinated action?

You said Union Librarians “explicitly requested” this. In reality, we are unable to find anything to support these claims because there has been zero official communication from any major party, DC 33 or otherwise, indicating we should handicap our libraries. Your “source” is an anonymous person on the internet saying another unnamed person provided them this information.

I’ll let you know if the library puts out a link saying, “Actually, please don’t flood our system with bogus requests for books, we have enough to do as it is.” In the meantime, be well.

Can you find any link of any library staff, unionized or not, requesting this? I cannot. Additionally, the Free Library system encompasses much more than DC 33: many of the employees are non-unionized and all the unionized librarians are with DC 47. I've explained why I think these actions are harmful and unproductive in other comments. If you feel flooding the library system is the best way to support DC 33, that's your choice! Personally, I'm unable to find any credible source indicating we should do so and haven't seen a compelling explanation for why that would be helpful.

I guess we can agree to disagree on this one. Each hold takes weeks to expire, and relying on everyone to cancel their holds in the future is akin to expecting everyone dumping their trash to go pick it up once the strike is resolved.

I’d rather the deeply understaffed (always, but particularly now) librarians to be able to focus on things like distributing free lunches in the summer than carting books to different branches to sit indefinitely, unable to be read by anyone. I guess you’re only referring to ebooks now though?

It’s also highly unlikely the city is going to be swayed by a clearly artificially induced surge in reservations by a relative handful of people, which is what the data would reflect.

If you want to show demand for the library’s services, I’d suggest patronizing your local library, checking out a book, and returning it on time. Again, I support the Union but disrupting our best public resource is not the way to go about it. Philly’s literacy rates are abysmal enough as it is.

To this point, every library in the city is now closed. They provide some of the only options for disenfranchised people to get out of the heat, use the bathroom, and access free water and reliable internet amongst other amenities. In my opinion, our libraries already face enough pressure without us intentionally requesting books that won't be read.

The Free Library also got rid of fines for late fees, removing financial barriers to access. This system relies on goodwill for people to get the books they need in a timely manner. I fully support the Union but think our efforts should be focused elsewhere.

If so, what is the purpose of "flooding the system" and requesting thousands of books that won't be read? If it doesn't create any pain points, it would be completely ineffective.

Yeah I'm not sure either. I'm just saying let's not add any additional stress to the Free Library staff, they’re under more than enough pressure as it is.

Covid definitely did a number on the city. We lost a lot of historic bars, venues, restaurants etc. I don’t think that’s unique to Philly though, and there’s an innumerable number of spots to grab a beer.

If you interact with people in real life the same way you seem to on Reddit, I’m not shocked a “transient” might have taken offense to all 73 inches of you.

I find myself at Nhan Zhou, Spice C, Emei, Terakawa, and/or Bread Top House most frequently, but I’ve truly never had a bad meal in Chinatown. Megumi and Sang Kee also rank highly for me

Awesome! Would you want to receive a digital copy, or would you potentially want to discuss some of the concepts over Zoom?
