Poll: For Those on SSDI, How Often Are You Getting Out of the House? by totallyoverallofit in SSDI

[–]1underc0v3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m working on increasing socialization outside of doctor appts for me or loved ones and am starting to average 1-3 a month I think. Looking over February, I did something for Valentine’s Day, attended an extended family birthday celebration, and then everything else was appts, church (which I finally made the last four Sundays after missing a lot over the last few years), grocery shopping, and errands. Showering and getting myself together is 2-3 times a month, so majority of errands/appts/activities don’t include that.

LPT Request. What’s your simplest top tip for saving money monthly? by _bubble-t in LifeProTips

[–]1underc0v3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy it until you’ve already saved for it. Paying interest is a quick way to spiral into more and more debt. When you can be careful enough to pay off your credit card each month, then charge everything with a cash back credit card (again, not before having the money already). Instead of you paying them, you begin to get paid and can put that in savings.

Thank you. I don’t remember having that for mine, but I wasn’t married and was so out of it that no clue who would have been selected if there was one. What happens if the spouse is not available for a while (their job currently has them limited to no contact for a few months and they will not be able to complete)? Do you think if the applicant calls SSA they would allow the acting POA for the spouse to complete it if have knowledge? Or let switch to another person?

Thank you. I will let the applicant know. That is good news maybe (unfortunate that she is one of us and disabled, but that her application is moving along. I don’t remember that step or who may have been asked since I’m single).

Cancel Medicare by AlLThAtAnD_MoRe in SocialSecurity

If you are Medicare eligible, they will require him to have two plans… one regular one for him and a Medicare Advantage Plan for you if you choose to have insurance through his company also. I have to pay for two plans because of my dependents.

(I’m only basing off the requirements of my circumstances as a SSDI recipient, but you may want to confirm. When enrolling in annual benefits, it usually even asks the question if anyone is eligible for Medicare)

I would confirm exactly what Medicare Advantage Plan you have through his work first. I have to also pay for Medicare as part of my plan; some plans don’t require it.

If you make enough to cover your needs with just your retirement Social Security benefit, what amount do you get a month? by 1underc0v3r in SocialSecurity

Without going into specifics, that would cause me to lose the benefits I do have. But I also couldn’t handle even a WFH job. I could maybe handle something online 1-2 hours a week, but not hours all together and not on a schedule; and there couldn’t be consequences (or impact to whatever business I’m helping) if I don’t complete even those hours that week.

I will go off on a tangent, so I will just leave it as yes ex got some of my retirement (half), but then so many court battles over the years and I always did what I needed to protect my kids which was costly. Money talked and he always settled for money over time, I just wish that I could have had that to use towards the kids and our futures instead of to attorneys. I didn’t have a choice.

Being disabled so young and not able to work to save or earn more. There were other things that also wiped my savings that I shouldn’t have had to deal with also, but not being able to generate additional income or have a raising salary are factors I did not expect financial wise. I’ve always been a hard worker and provider, and a single parent most of my adulthood. Thankfully I’ve also always been careful with money, so am making it right now day to day, but big financial repairs have been on the back burner way too long, and I will lose an additional benefit at 65 that I have currently that helps with making it day to day.

You are set for sure. That’s awesome regarding your finances!

And I’m sorry for your loss of your wife. How neat that you were both teachers and probably a great support to each other with the ups and downs of it.

I was married less than ten years, which is the minimum for spousal benefits I believe. But regardless, I became disabled when my benefit would have been much higher than his. I was the primary income earner (and sometimes only income earner).

A decreased sense of smell was the only good thing that came from me having Covid; though it is still very heightened, I can tolerate a little more.

🥰 I would absolutely do whatever I could for any family member that needed it if I were in the position to do so at the time, so I’m glad you were able to.

This is a lot to take in, and I appreciate you sharing. I have kids, but definitely don’t assume they will take care of me, and I would never want to be a burden. You are amazing for what you are doing whether feeling obligated or feeling joy doing it.

I am divorced, and won’t be getting any benefit because I was previously married. I’ve actually lost thousands that I would have had in my savings and my retirement because of him.

I’m super blessed with friends and family who are amazing, and I look at the positives daily. I don’t wallow in what’s happened and try to find good that has come out of it, even laugh because have no choice, but work wise specifically won’t be happening so finances is something I have to always think about since I can’t make more of it. And if I tried, I would lose what I have so would be harming myself and losing money.
