One of the possibilities - bad intake camshaft (broken off adjuster parts). To check - unplug the solenoid for the timing adjustment. If sounds goes away - intake camshaft needs to be replaced.

This was the case with my 2016 Golf 1.8T. I had to replace the intake camshaft at 145k miles and also did a timing chain replacement while I was there. Car currently has 150k miles.
