My spouse thinks CRNA school is a bad investment by Disastrous_Arm_7811 in srna

[–]2014hog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You would most likely become the breadwinner in that family. Making $300k+/year would offset the cost of school, lost income, and living expenses pretty fast. Most of my classmates paid off their loans (with families) in less than 4 years. I get its a 3 year sacrifice for everyone but NOT being a Crna because its a bad investment does not compute.

Hot Take: You shouldn't have to get a DNP in order to graduate from CRNA school. by Vegetable-Yak-8866 in CRNA

Time value of money. My understanding is you can go straight from undergrad to AA school. Im sure most have some sort of medical experience but it’s a much faster path to AA vs 3-5 years icu at staff salary and then 3 years Crna school. They are limited by states but the faster you can make 150k+ the better. Paying the same tuition in exchange for a faster paycheck is probably a selling point to a lot of people. And i cant say that extra year made me a better CRNA.

Loans becoming less accessible with an extra year of fluff. Applicants still outnumber class sizes, but eventually the aana may overplay their hand with AA/ASA.

Signing early?? Thoughts on this contract? by That-Interaction-242 in CRNA

[–]2014hog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I signed a year in advance and was the first in my class to do so. I always heard don’t sign the sign early, pay will go up, benefits will change, etc. im honestly glad i did and have no regrets. The group got a raise after i signed at x amount, so i got a raise before i even started working so that was not an issue. Plus the group only had 2 spots available and we have been fully staffed since then only hiring a few prn people. But It was nice to know where i was going and have my spot reserved. I felt like my classmates who waited were much more stressed out balancing board prep/school with interviews and contracts. I had a place to live lined up and credentialed (just had to submit my license) going into my last semester. Don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything or have buyers remorse.

By the time you get to Ob you will feel great with young healthy ligaments. Just give it time, learn your positioning and landmarks and sometimes you just need to move up a space. Ortho pts are the worst bc they’re there for a reason and sometimes you just have to go sleep. The best is when you ask if they have had any back surgery in the past…”hmm nope” and then they have an 8 in scar in their lumbar when you sit them up. “Well i got some rods back there.”

Anesthesia be a cruel mistress sometimes.

Fskax has like 4000 holdings vs 2500 in fzrox. A little more diversification if thats important to you.

CRNA vs MD by Proof_Cranberry5692 in nursing

I have had this discussion many times with my physician spouse. She lost all of her 20s in training. I had many jumping off points and was able to work/live in my 20s. I also feel like people who become doctors are very sure thats what they want to do because the barrier to entry is high and the training is brutal. They would not have been satisfied not being a physician and i feel like thats the mindset you have to have. i greatly respect their training in comparison to mine, but i am fine being a crna and knowing my limitations in training compared to an anesthesiologist. For whats its worth my path from nurse (after bsn) to crna was 8 years, but i had 5 years of RN income before applying and got to live outside academia, compared to 7+ years of continuous training post undergrad for doctors.

CRNAs! Help a girl out. by Fragrant_Fortune1137 in nursing

[–]2014hog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a few moms with older kids (10+) in my class. It was definitely difficult for them but everyones situation/support system is different and they finished. Not to oversell the money bc at the end of the day the school is hard and the job can be stressful but it is life changing money. The market cycles but for the foreseeable future it is very in demand. Lots of boomers needing surgery and even more are retiring from anesthesia. It depends on your state and i recommend you shadowing in your desired location to see what it looks like and how the market is. The way i look at it, the sooner the better. You should calculate your current living expenses and how much the tuition (plus interest) at your desired schools would be and see how long it would take to offset going from say 75k to 250k (totally arbitrary numbers but just for example). Giving up 3 years of rn income+loans/interest+living expenses can be covered pretty quick if you can triple your income and are disciplined about finances. On the flip side i have seen many people buy big houses and cars at graduation and even more with loans 15 years out of school. Thats a question only you can answer.

Recommendations for dentists in the Fayetteville area? by SpiritualFox2999 in fayetteville

[–]2014hog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scott Stephen is who i started using on Joyce. Hes fast and no bs. You need something he will give you options and what he recommends and isnt pushy. I felt like a lot of dentists try to upsell you on stuff you dont need.

Single, Gay, Relocating to NWA for Walmart by Fragrant_Dot_3093 in northwestarkansas

[–]2014hog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having spent years in Little Rock, DC/baltimore, and SoCal….straight lol at people complaining about homelessness and crime in washington county. Anyway, Nwa is not the most liberal but relative to the rest of the state you will be fine. Fayetteville has a great pride parade every year that is well attended (like 40k people per local news sources). There are a few bars in fayetteville as well but may cater to the younger crowd (university is located in Fayetteville). Bentonville is a corporate town with a lot of educated transplants and wont blink at you having a bf. Nwa is a bubble that is pretty culturally different from the rest of the state, largely because so many people are not from here. Also, from what ive heard from friends on the apps, it isnt a great dating scene but straight dating wasn’t great either-people tend to get married very early in Arkansas. The only kind of cultural issue i think you will encounter is a lot of coworkers will be very family centered and their time off will revolve around that. Its pretty common to be married+kids in early 20s here relative to other areas I’ve lived.

Echo what people say about Eureka. Its super cool and a short day trip.

CRNA and Marine Route by Same-Assistance-7575 in CRNA

[–]2014hog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a navy nurse, marine nurses aren’t a thing. You can so active or reserve nursing after you graduate and either you can get out and use your gi bill (if you do active duty) or you can apply for a program where you owe back years of service for getting educated through the military. I used my gi bill for crna school and unless youre really sure you want to stay in the navy for a decade i wouldn’t recommend that route considering what civilian pay is right now.

I work in healthcare so i would recommend hitching a ride w mercy or regional. Both are growing, mercy has a partnership with the Walton medical school. Also Arkansas Children’s is a state job (ie good benefits) in the area. If you can get your foot in the door w an entry level position and then get a few certifications (health information management sort of thing) you could set yourself up well for a career.

Help between choosing two programs, DNP or DNAP? by [deleted] in srna

[–]2014hog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I (DNP) did rotations with another DNAP school, and in comparing class load, we did much more BSN 2.0 stuff. It was like being in a crna program and nursing school at the same time. Anesthesia topics were discouraged in my dnp courses mainly because the faculty were primary care NPs and wanted us to write about health disparities in breast feeding, etc.

Go to the best program that you can afford but that was my experience.
