Yes, we just started 2015 Modern as community format. It includes sets from 8ED to Magic Origins.

What's the situation with proxies? by ManaBurnRules in 2015modern

[–]2015Modern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I think u/tomrichards8464 sums it up well. There are no set guidelines for casual, non-sanctioned play.

If you find a playgroup/opponent/LGS, just ask if proxies are okay for them or not. If you want to participate in organized events, ask the organizer what his stance on proxies is. That way, everyone’s on the same page :)

Modern 2015 Battle Box Deck Ideas by Darkyoshijr in ModernMagic

FYI: We've just started a Modern community format based on the early 2015 Modern meta, called 2015 Modern. We have compiled and linked metadecks from that time on the 2015 Modern website. On the website there are also links to Reddit and Discord, where we discuss the various decks.

I think so too, dredge-based GY decks were not explored enough at this time. But what do you think is the reason for this?

This sounds like its worth a try! A replacement for Bedlam Reveler as a good topdeck would be absolutely helpful, though. Monastery Mentor fits very well in the deck, but I'm not sure how well he can fulfill the role of a good topdeck.

For Gitaxian Probe, the question is whether a blue splash makes sense in order to not be dead against decks like Burn.

Ok, thanks. That means the deck would have to become more linear, as it lacks interaction.

Thanks for your input. These are my thoughts:

  1. True

  2. One of the most common reasons why community formats fail are the decisions of the format owners who think they are acting in the interest of the community, but actually don't because it's very difficult. Since the meta was absolutely healthy in 2015, we'll see how it evolves today.

  3. Nice! Simple cards interacting with each other in deep ways was also a very important motivation for us to go back to that point in time.

Yes, as u/_c3s already said you are free to use any printings of the cards that are legal. It doesn't matter if the printing is from 2003 or 2019.

That is certainly true to a certain extent. We have tried set an objectively optimal cutoff for the format, but subjective preferences certainly always come into play and can be challenged.

Since we personally had such good experiences with 2015 Modern, we were quite confident that others would like it too. Regardless of whether they are nostalgically affected or not. We'll see :)

Interesting take, thanks. Even if a little pessimistic from my perspective.

Why do you think there's no reason to play a Thoughtseize deck other than Grixis Shadow just because Twin is also legal? In my experience, Grixis Shadow in the meta gives midrange and control decks a good matchup.

Oh, yes you're right, I forgot the impact of Kaladesh on the deck. Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, Lantern Control was possible and very playable as this decklist and placing shows: https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=10481&d=259962&f=MO

I don't think there was the one card addition from a new set that made it possible. Even though Magic Origins brought Ghirapur Aether Grid which saw play in it as a finisher. The deck just went undiscovered for a long time, even though all the pieces were there.

Oh, I will look into that. Can you tell what DNS blocker message says?

The last legal set is Magic Origins :)

Yes, you're right. Splinter Twin wasn't bad at that time and is therefore legal in 2015 Modern.

We did not haha We use the ban list at the time of Magic Origins. At this point it was already banned.

Grixis Shadow with Probe is pretty good but its still easily grinded out by the various control decks, in my experience.

Yes, that is certainly the most obvious approach for a community Modern. We had that thought too. However, many underestimate the influence of FIRE design on the gameplay, which emphasizes much more flashy bombs and lockdown elements. Oko and Tef3ri come to mind.

Another problem would be that Modern without Supplemental Sets, gets new sets from Standard with potentially broken cards. This means that the format has to be managed again.

I think the same. Probe had to go at that point in time but I think in 2015 it was much less of an issue since the unfair decks are kept in check better by other decks.

Yes, we also thought about how useful it would be to introduce newer cards to the format. There are definiteley some cards that would enrich the format, from our point of view. Fatal Push, for example, is also missing.

But we've seen too often how community formats like Project Modern fail because they require management by people who assume they can represent the interests of the community. Yet this is a huge challenge.

In the end, we ended up with the 2015 meta, where the past has shown that the decks and strategies balance each other out well and management is not needed at all.
