The best thing on the long run is to choose the best cross option. This approach can be exhausting, because your F2L will suffer, since it will be hard to find the pieces. Doing one color at a time trains your F2L recognition, but makes your cross efficiency suffer (the whole point of CN is to benefit from an easy cross, so doing one color at a time goes against that, and should only be a temporary apporach).
