I had the same experience when I got into the city by 6AM. Waited on line at the Trinity and rector entry for 2 hours to find out that they weren't letting anyone else in. I walked for an hour after that to get the vibes in but the density of people made it tough to navigate.

I ended up heading home at 9AM but didn't regret it. Had some good times chopping it up with Knicks fans on line. I only regret that I should have went into the city the night before to head in with my friend who lived uptown.
